Ok, I've read a bit about this Sim (good things) and having not played a combat sim in quite a few years I'm up to the challenge. But all this stuff about patches and expansions has me a little  Huh you know.

But I found that Circuit City has the Lock On Gold edition and was wondering (I've tried finding out on my own) if this is a complete version to date, not needing any patches or expansion.

Anybody know??

(getting the 3-pack is tempting but I rather get this one on its own if no patch needed)

Well I continued searching and came across a Forum for Lomac and got my question answered. Basically the Gold edition contains the original game + the 'Flaming Cliffs' expansion which upgrades graphics and adds a bunch of missions.

The following quote from a recent post there was very helpful:

"The main thing is to get up to version 1.1 called "Flaming Cliffs" LO-MAC Gold includes this version. Once there- you can patch it up to 1.12a for free."

So only one patch needed after buying the Gold edition...

Exactly.  If you want to try a modern combat sim, LOMAC is the best out there.

Check this out...

I can get the original game locally at a store for $20,
then buy the Flaming Cliffs expansion for $15 which is a download,
then patch that with 1.12 for free...total $35 (not much waiting)

                            OR

I can buy Lomac Gold via Amazon for $20 w/free shipping (expansion incl.),
then just apply the free 1.12 patch,
$15 savings  Shocked just need a little patience for shipping.

But, oh, one negative thing with Lomac Gold.  Sad There's a chance that the second CD containing the expansion is faulty. That had been a real issue early on. If so, not a real big deal, I just have to send it to evolved games and they send back a good one as stated on their website.

Worth the $15 savings? For me, yeah.
1) Won't have my new PC for a good 3 weeks anyway.
2) I have yet to buy FS9 which costs $20, mostly covered by the savings Cool

Sorry for the babbling, it's very slow here at work, I'll try to  Lips Sealed

Lock On Gold cost me about £15 the other week, and have had no problems with it.

In fact, since I got it, I've flown it almost exclusively, as opposed to flying in FS9.

The Gold edition that may have had the bad CD should have been pulled from the shelves long ago so you shouldn't have a issue with it. If I recall the bad CD was actually Starforce Smiley

LOMAC is a great combat SIM, probably one of two that I'd consider "best" (for modern air combat).  The other is Falcon 4.0 AF.  I find myself playing Falcon a lot more simply because there's a lot more systems depth (I find that complex systems are the primary appeal of modern combat sims).  LOMAC is outstanding, you'll love it.  It'll leave you wishing Microsoft used their flight model.

That's kinda what I'm afraid of, getting these two games but only playing one all the time and not the other. But, again, for $20 bucks each, whatever. I just spent a quick 2-G's on a new Dell XPS. What's 40 dollars?!?! I even threw in the latest scrabble game for the wife...God I love Amazon!

Flight sims are all I care about anyway, oh and Simcity 4...We love Simcity 4  Grin

I'm curious how Lomac will run on my system-to-be:
Intel Dual Core E6600 4MB 2.4GHz 1066FSB
2GB 667MHz Memory
256MB nVidia GeForce 7900GS

I also have a Logitech Wingman Force 3D joystick, can wait to try it out.

Fine.

I'm running it on mid-high settings with good FPS on:
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ 1.67Ghz
756Mb RAM
nVidia GeForce 6800GT

Have installed a premade FPS tweak which could also have helped, but it runs very nicely. I could say it looks better than FS9.

Just an update (I mentioned some of this in the FS2004 forum)...

Just got my Dell XPS410 day before last and yesterday received FS9 and Lock On Gold. As for Lomac, second CD (Flaming Cliffs expansion) worked fine with installation, no issues. Then I put the 1.12 patch and it's good to go. Look's great on my 20" widescreen LCD with high settings!! I love it already...Gotta do some serious reading with this game though and configure my joystick for it.

Oh, and the wife loves the scrabble game I got for her so she's happy too  Cool

BTW, the 30-watt Dell speakers I got sound great,Shocked I'm very impressed.
