Mission in FSX "Monsoon Approach" (Read 4229 times)

I tried the mission "monsoon approach", and I have some problems in this mission. (use ILS to land singapore airport)

before landing (B744), heading 050 and alt 2,500 to intercept ILS localizer, after co-pilot told me their is a localizer, I press "NAV" and the a/c turn left to 023 to line up with the runway. few moments later, co-pilot told me that we have intercepted the glide slope, then I press "APP" ("NAV" switch off automatically), a/c slowly decent......but everytime it will "land" in front of the runway.....any thing I done wrong?

Whats your airspeed on touchdown? It seems to me your most likely too slow.

oh...yeah..........

I found that it may because of too slow

because I just followed the co-pilot (he told me to slow down to 160knots)

now I decent with airspeed 185 knots, and just right ahead the runway, increase to 195knots, it lands safely........

Ummm There is something very wrong with your approach!!!!! Only Concorde was able to touch down at 190kts.
Your original speed should have been ok. Most a/c aim to be at screen height at about 135kts.Presumably you are set to use IAS and not TAS.

There are some airports in the sim that have ILS set incorrectly so that one flies too deep into the rwy leaving not much stopping distance.
If you are above 50ft at screen height then kill the AP and land manually. Check the VASI's they should agree with your ILS indication if not go with the VASI indication ie land manually.

What are surface winds and heading?  If this is supposed to be an approach in a monsoon and you're flying off of indicated airspeed, I could see some problems.  Ideally, IAS should be the same as airspeed over the wings so that 160 kts is always good, but depending on the wind direction and speed, as well as rapid pressure changes seen in a monsoon, I could see this altering things.  Just a thought.  Try switching the display to the unrealistic true airspeed and see what happens with landing.  Bear in mind, my FSX is waiting for me once I get home from school, so I am basing this on my knowledge of FS2004 and real life flying that may or may not be relevant in FSX.

The mission name is gay, and Microsoft are DUMB. There's no such thing as "monsoons" in Singapore - that's comming from someone who lived there for 8 years!!

Could i get some very little remark and opinion in here. I feel you are not flying. You set up some chips, lean back and press enter, go and take some tea, then go back, take a look and ask are we down?!
This is not flying.......
As i said, just a very little opinion.

I'm sure you will alter your opinion if you were to do a real "autoland" in ZERO visibility. This I have done twice in a VC10. On the first occaision the crew broke open their sandwiches and on the second the Captain asked us crossword puzzle clues.  The first indication of ground was the sound of the undercarriage making contact.  Aaaaahhhh that's flying!!!!!

Thanks a lot mate, you are so informative.  I will try again tonight. And I am new in FSX, I still don't know how to prepare a flight plan and land with ILS in "free flight". I will try if there is (are) any other mission(s) need to use ILS

I've flown the FSX Monsoon Mission, Java, and have a realworld instruemnt rating so hope I can help. Yes, I have the big, green check-mark to prove it.

From reading your initial post where you clicked NAV when heading 050 to intercept, you should have selected APP at this point. APP is engaged BEFORE the LOC or the ILS is reached. Of course, there are two (2) NAV switches on FS panels: The one on the radio (to which I refer) and the other switches from GPS to NAV. The latter -- by design -- must have been selected or the HSI needles will not pick up any ILS activity,

Presuming you do all the other good stuff your B744 should pick up the LOC and turn inbound to 023 and once "in the slot" (that's pilot talk for having intercepted both the LOC and the Glidepath) just ride her down to about 400' AGL and uncouple the autopilot.

The Decision Height (DH) for the ILS DME Rwy02C at WSSS is 215' for this mission. The IAP plate is included in the briefing. Here's a close-up of the 'good stuff'.

This is not a Category Landing (I, II or III) so we will hand-fly the B744 to touchdown. The 02C runway is visible -- as is the approach lighting system -- long before the DH is reached.

Remember: an ILS is not an autoland system and the transmitter is not on (nor, sometimes, anywhere near, the runway). It is a guidance system to place the plane and crew close enough to the runway so they can earn their pay. And they do!

i have never been brave enough to turn up the APP hold and just sit there and watch what happens, specially after flying for 2 + housr straight... i mean, the last thing i want to see after a long flight is dumb AP ramming my plane onto the dirt ten meters before the runway Tongue... so, i switch to manual Grin

It works on the VC10 which does have autoland in real life. And as for being "brave"  this is the moment you choose to break open your sandwiches or ask the flight crew to help you with your crossword puzzle. To do a zero visibility autoland in real life is quite exhilarating!!!  The first and only indication of success is the undercarriage contacting the ground. Remember that as far as I know no a/c has been lost on an autoland approach whereas countless a/c have crashed on visual!!!
