I've always noticed, but never thought to figure it out.  Curious as to what the "Course" dial on the autopilot is for (737).  I've always assumed it was related to heading, but then it goes up to 400 or whatever it was.   Any terminology help for me?  Smiley

P.S.  Another quicky,  what exactly is flight idle thrust?  I assume its not the same as complete idle.

The course adjustment on the jet's auto-pilot is just like the course adjustment on a regular HSI, or even like the OBS on a VOR gauge. If you're using the VOR indications in the HSI for navigating, you'd dial in the desired radial as the "course". And of course (no pun intended), you'd dial in runway heading when using the HSI's  localizer and glidescope.

Edit:  The course setting in the auto-pilot can't be a number larger that 359. Maybe you were adjusting the airspeed setting by mistake when you went up to and above 400 ?
