Here is my first Irfan edit. It's not a lot, I just wanted to washout some of the color and add a hint of yellow to give it the feeling of vintage film. I did it originally for my avatar, but the full size picture looked good enough that I decided to post it.
Original:
Edit:
Any comments on the saturation / color combination? Does it look authentic or is there some other tweaking that could make it better?

I like the edit. Looks more realistic than the original.

Nice editting, but the shot looks a bit hazy to me. Try darkening it a bit. (If you use photoshop, use the dodge tool)
EDIT: Whoops, just read you used Irfanview...
I played around a bit with this shot in photoshop and this is what I got. I hope you don't mind me posting this...
I played a bit with the levels, burnt it, dodged it and I applied some photo filters. Nothing special really...

Wow, the planes really jump out of the screen. One of these days I'll buy/learn how to use photoshop. Clearly it does wonders in the right hands.

Thanks for the kind words.
Maybe there are other programs that can also do things like this. I never worked with Irfanview, so I don't know what it does exactly. Another good free image editing program is Gimp. (Google it!
)
However, photoshop and paint shop pro are the best programs there are, but alos the most expensive.
