Hi all!
I am having trouble converting ground textures in fsx.

Replacement Ground Autogen Textures:

This will convert all the ground textures from 1024×1024 to 512×512. Unless you have a 256 meg or 512 meg video card, you’re probably not going to be able to use the full resolution 1024×1024 textures anyway. The 512×512 textures are 170k each, compared to 682k each for the 1024×1024 textures. The other bonus from doing this is the initial load of the sim is much quicker and there should be a lot less hard drive activity required when flying around. So here are the steps:

1) Backup your C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\World\Texture folder. You’ll get 4 gigs back after the conversion is done.

2) Download NConvert at the XnView website. It’s freeware.

3) You must have Imagetool.exe from the FS SDK. If you have Deluxe Edition of FSX, you’ve got it on your DVDs if you install the SDK. Otherwise you can get it from the FS2004 Terrain SDK. I’m pretty sure the FS2004 version of Imagetool.exe will work.

4) Download and unzip this small bat file.

5) Copy ImageTool.exe, nconvert.exe and the bat file into your C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery\World\Texture folder. Note that this will work no matter what folder you installed FSX to.

6) Run the bat file. It will only process the ground textures. It won’t do anything with any of the other textures or any other folders. Feel free to open the bat file with a text editor to see exactly what it’s doing. You’ll see that it uses nconvert.exe to resize each texture then ImageTool.exe to add back in the mip maps and convert to DXT1. Note that this will probably take at least an hour to process everything. There are about 6,700 textures to process.

7) That’s it.

I downloaded all that the directions said .  I can't get the files converted.  Any gurus out there know how to do this. I know I am doing something wrong . Help please . I would appreciate it . Thanks

ACES have specifically recommended that this 'tweak' should NOT be done. The bat file converts everything in the folder and all of the files that have alpha channels will lose them. The result will be a SIGNIFICANT degradation of the program.

A very large number of people have also reported that this leaves the autogen trees inverted and because the textures also have alpha channels, they will have black squares or triangles around them.

I have investigated this and found EXACTLY the above. I strongly recommend that you DO NOT touch this 'tweak' with a barge pole. If you delete your original files you will end up having to do a complete reinstall.

Rollerball that is because they do not complete the change fully.

You basically change DXT5 to BMP files then change the BMP files to DXT1 (which still retains the alpha channel I believe)

DXT1 files are not as big as DXT5 ones. The tweek worked perfect for me. If you do not convert the BMP's back to DXT1 this is when you get upside down trees etc etc. My trees are perfectly up the right way  Grin  I would think there is a file no the net you can just download with replacement textures by now though so you dont have to do the conversion yoursef.

Tweeking is always a risk, unfortunately almost all of us having to tweek FSX to get it playable and pretty at the same time at the moment. Just ALWAYS remember to back up any files you may be changing. The worst thing you can do is not do this and screw your sim up.

Hi Gix, I can only repeat what Phil Taylor of ACES said. They have been assessing all of the tweaks that people have been proposing and he specifically said that they do not recommend doing this one because of the severe degradation that would result. His words, not mine  ???

Yeah I can see what he is saying 100% You are bound to loose some quality/detail if you reduce the size of the files.

The trouble is there are few of us at the moment who can actually utilise the autogen fully with our current PC setups. I have changed the textures knowing that they have lost some quality however for me that minute trade off (I really dont study the trees just recognise they are there) off quality over performance is worth it.

I will say that I 'haven't' altered my ground texture files as like you said Rollerball they would loose quality and I didnt really want to do that on the ground ones. But Trees and Clouds I did.

I'm saving up monthly now so I can build myself a new system next year, probably late spring / early summer so I will be able to just install the sim and fly it without any of these texture tweeks etc. Until then it is a compromise for me  Sad
