'Threatening Note' Found Aboard U.S. Airways Plane

Robin Rieger
Reporting

(CBS 3) PHILADELPHIA Authorities at Philadelphia International Airport shutdown two runways after a threatening note was found aboard a U.S. Airways plane arriving from San Diego.

Philadelphia Firefighters, police officers, F.B.I. and Bomb Squad members greeted passengers aboard U.S. Airways Flight 1500 when it made a scheduled landing at Philadelphia International Airport around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Authorities said a 'threatening note' that referenced explosives, was found aboard the flight prompting a response by emergency personnel.

All 127 passengers were interviewed by officials and re-screened prior to entering the airport to catch connection flights and claim baggage.

Authorities have not disclosed exactly when or where the note was found.

The incident remains under investigation and no arrests have been made.

Airport officials said air traffic was not affected and flights arrived and departed as scheduled.

I find it more disconcerting these notes are always found after they arrive. If it was written on the flight as a joke or some tabloid trying to make a security story they will be found. If it was written before the flight, then cleaning and security arn't doing their jobs right, and if it were a serious threat it would have been too late.

I guess it's better to err on the side of caution or whatever, but surely if someone had a bomb on a plane and expected to use that to leverage some demand, they wouldn't hide a note somewhere, hoping it would be found-  they'd tell someone about the bomb (as has been the case in every actual bomb-threat scenario aboard an aircraft).  Roll Eyes

....or someone with bad intentions planted the note so that the manner and promptness in which the authorities react can be observed.  Who knows who planted the note, a moron, a crackpot, or worse.
