Or is it just me?

I mean starting with Verizon's LG Chocolate commercial featuring GoldFrappe, then Altell useing another GoldFrappe song, then VZN useing Imogen Heap's Headlock in their newest commercial. Then FX has a whole series of commericals for their shows featuring variousl artists such as GoldFrappe, The Real Tuesday Weld, and the one for Dirt (artist I can't remember at the moment). Then you have Tab Energy useing Teddybears Sthlm & Mad Cobra's Cobrastyle.

And finally Intel's Core 2 Duo commercials arn't too shabby ithor. I've gotta say advertising isn't that bad anymore, but I could do without drug commericals. I cant watch TV without thinking I have 5 serious medical problems Sad But then again they can't be that bad, I mean they usually come with a hot chick and a puppy running on the beach.

Cheers
Cameron

If you need to sell your music to a advertisement to make a buck then that shows that no one is buying your albums.
I noticed that Axl has sold Guns and Roses tunes to advertising, wonder if that is in hopes people remember who Guns and Roses was before the release of the 13 year album in the making? Which may really be good if it were Guns and Roses and not the Axl Rose band, lmao.

Pharmaceutical commercials drive me insane, a new wonder drug that has more side effects that will kill you than the problem it cures, although the babe and puppy is always a nice reason to watch, stimulating and sweet at the same time  Grin

I have over 400-Cable channels but when I want to watch something or just listen to great music I use Youtube.com on my PC.

Televisions' days are numbered . . . start the count-down  Grin

advertisers are targeting certain age groups buying power in order to intice various age groups into buying their products or using their services. In order to do this the advertiser tries to associate the product with the consumer by using something familair to them. This could be an old TV show, a style of music whatever... this is most obcious in car commercials...

for example when the 2029 corvette comes out they will likely use music from bands like NIRVANA or PEARL JAM in order to plug the product to people from that generation who would then be in the 50 year plus age group and would be most likely to have the money to spend on a car like that.

i offer the following examples

example one - rolling stones with corvette
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtxUBXBl_E4
the typical teen-20's ager of 1968 when this song was released would be in his mid to late 50's at the release of this commercial. therfore it targets those who are in that particular buying group and have the buying power to go for a car of this type.

Example two
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDdOErIdkX4
the scion car commercial - it gives off a hip, youthful, inner city feel, and therfore targets younger people with smaller budgets as the target buyer for the car.

Example three
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlMvStDmk3k
BMW 5 series commercial. with an MSRP of just over $50,000 - again the target audience in this situation is the  over 50 generation, therfore the commercial uses music from that persons late teen / early twenties life with the song "Pictures of Machstick Men" by the group Status Quo which was released in 1968 as well anyone who was around and loved that type of music in the late 60s would be in the over 50 age group and would probably enjoy the commercial.

its not just that music is getting better in the commericals, it is that the advertising agencies are getting smarter in the way they target consumers. If you think music in commercials is good... then you are either in the target consumer group or you just happen to like the particular song.

If you think the music is "Old" or you cant identify with it - well you are probably NOT the target consumer.

I also think it has allot to do with 20 & 30 year olds are now the people making these commercials. Since they are still heavily into their youth and there seems to be no "generation gap" anymore, the songs that you hear are the songs that they - we listen to.
It is marketing!!  Grin

Ritter's hit it on the head.  I wasn't going to say anything about it originally, but that was an excellent post.  I mean, come on Cameron.  You must have known it wasn't just a coincidence or "better music directors" that was making the music in advertising "better."  They just wanted you to notice.  Marketing is incredibly sophisticated, every single facet of a commercial is carefully chosen for a specific purpose.

I would be more tempted to buy a car if the ad contained naked chicks in it rather than music Grin
