Anyone know of some WW1 aircraft that convert well to AI? I've been using JSQCEd to convert addon WW1 planes for QC, but most either crash on their own or they don't fight very aggressively. I've tried turning up the enemy skill level, but they fly like chumps.  Roll Eyes

Frankie_4_Finger you have picked the most facinating period of Aviaton history to simulate flying. World war one was the original period in history that men really learned to fly.

The pilots of the time where the bravest aviators in history. They where the pioneers of aviation. Their planes where more expiriments then real flying machnes. More where lost to deficiencies of their designs then by the enemy.

Just taking of and landing was a adventure. This planes where very unstable and many crushed while taking a position to shot down there enemy.

You see the Ai may be reflecting this conditions. My biggest sugestion is for you try to build your own missions.

It seems to me that planes in this and other sims react and fly better through their mission builder than through the quick mission practice mode.

Beside I suspect that quick mission practice mode has more levels than we realize. For example if you pick the veteran level the Ai may fly as aggresive and neatral or average. Its up to the program to chose.

You may have to fly several times at veteran level before you can get the reaction from the Ai that you really want.

Frankie_4_Finger if you want you can browse through this post you will find several Websites dedicated to World war one. You can find Coyotes Mission builder tutorial in it too.

The flight dynamics of most 3rd party aircraft is usually completely unsuitable for the AI 'pilots'. The easiest way over this is to create unflyable "AI Only" versions of the aircraft you wish to use in missions.

Thanks for your replies guys. I probably won't get into mission building as i don't fly combat very often. I'll try the unflyable option and see how that works. Also, i thought i might try the default camel airfile from cfs1 since the default aircraft work so well as AI.

It's actually straight out of FS98 but it wouldn't be a bad starting point.

The default camel airfile didn't work, the model wouldn't load. However, i tried the airfile from the FS2002 cessna 172 and it worked just fine.  Smiley

The Fs2002 Cessna will be a bit fast for a WWI biplane. Did you try the FS2002 Camel airfile?

Thanks Woodlouse, i forgot there was a camel in 02. I tried it but it didn't seem to make much differance, it flies ok but it mostly runs away rather than fight. Roll Eyes

How do i do this? I tried removing the panel and sound folders, but the model wouldn't load. Do i change anything in the cfg? I already changed the title by adding "_ai" to the title.

First I suggest you make a duplicate version of the flyable aircraft. Use a different folder name by adding "_ai" to the title as you've already done. It might be a good idea to change the file prefix of the AIR & DP files in the same way. (Myplane.air to Myplane_ai.air.)
Edit Aircraft.cfg to use the new files (sim=Myplame_ai) & change the title= name to something suitable (example sim=Myplane AI. You can use aliased panel & sound or delete their respective CFG files as they're not used in AI. You must leave the Panel & Sound folders even if they're empty. To remove your new AI Only drone from the CFS2 selection menu. edit the AIR file with AirEd from the Utilities section, changing the Aircraft Type from 0 to 2.

PS. I posted a tute for doing this in CFS1 some years ago. The idea is basically the same for CFS2 except that you don't need to re-scale the MDLs. http://www.simviation.com/lair/AI%20drones.htm

Isn't there something in the DP file that says whether the aircraft is a fighter or a bomber? Perhaps thats your problem at the moment.

Edit: In the DP file, under [MISC_DATA] see what number comes after "Catagory". If it's 2 then change it to 1 and try it again.

Well, after all that i think missions are probably the only way to go. The plane just doesn't try very hard to get on my 6. Maybe i'll search for some WW1 missions.

Frankie_4_Fingers if you try Woodlouse2002 method you need to go back to the specific AC folder you chose to change its catagory and delete the CPD file inside the AC folder then and only then will it accept its new catagory. Maybe that will help you.

I still say the best way is to build your own mission with you choosing the quality of your opponet.
