LOL!!!! Once the politicians get used to all that tax money, they're not easily willing to give it back!

In the US, there's many toll bridges and toll roads that have long since payed for the construction of those bridges and roads, but they keep on collecting!

I only remember one instance of a taxing authority actually stop collecting taxes because the purpose was completed - Jacksonville, Florida removed the toll booths on the I-295 loop after the road was paid for.
