Old news. Have had it for about two weeks now. Lets just say A LOT has changed. For starters driver issues are no longer. Everything I plug in works, and they have included a lot of OEM stuff, so its much like a Mac. Also its more stable, I have yet to bluescreen. And finally we can access the XP folders, you couldn't do that before, and they have seriously toned down the "Protecting yourself from yourself" crap.

All in all its a great OS, but then again any beta OS that lets me play WoW with no loss of framerate, FSX with decent frames, and NFSMW with no problems is Okay by me. Unfortunately the Defcon demo didn't run, but I'm going to run it through steam and see if that helps.

Cheers
Cameron

NO! Don't do the upgrade from XP to Vista. You wouln't loose your stuff, but you cant "downgrade" back to XP if you don't like Vista. So if you don't like it you have to reformat. And yes FS does work OKAY! Not great, but Okay. I'm getting around 28FPS with maxed settings in SeaTac, and around 20FPS in my higher terrain meshed areas. FSX will run for me at about 12FPS with maxed settings (compaired to my 25 ~ 30 in XP). So will it work? Yes, would I suggest useing Vista to fly...no.

If you do install, only do so on a secondary partition that you don't care about, or a second drive that is fine to loose. DO NOT overwrite your XP install.

Cheers

I'm getting the E6600, as I can OC it to atleast 2.8Ghz, and the cheaper processer allows me to get a second video card.

And your rig will most definately score a 5. And do give FSX a whirl, I think my problem was the laging processer on only one core.

Cheers

thats a good cpu

just have to be careful with some of the lower end conroe's because some sites are advertising it as conroe when they are actualy allenadle cores. i think its the 1.8 and 2.1 cores that have the problem.

by xmas i should be runnign FSX max settings good fps

AMD x2 4600+
256mb 7900GS XT
4GB ram

should do that trick

If your running that primarily on XP then drop to 2GB of RAM (XP will only recognise 2GB), and get two 79050GT insted of the one 7900GTX 512MB. FS's textures arn't big enough for the 512MB card to be worth it. FSX will be, but your going to want DX10 for that, and then the 1GB cards will be out.

As for my processer, I woudn't bother with the 2MB L2 processers, so I'm not all the worried.

Cheers

The E6300 and E6400 are Allendale cores. I haven't got a clue why anyone is calling them Conroe really.

As for the extra 2mb cache of the E6600 and higher, it's supposed to be equivalent to an extra 200mhz clock speed. Not a huge difference.

The bigger advantage with the E6600 and higher is the higher multipliers, which allow higher overclocks without the motherboard conking out on FSB.

Edit: @Cameron: XP Pro will recognise up to 4Gb of physical memory, using /3g boot.ini switch Wink

Mmmk I'm going to write that off as l33+ sP33k and not correct it.

And the thing is that most people see Core 2 Duo and think Conroe, I was victom for awhile.
