the British had a paper design by Armstrong Whitworth - the AW. 681. Both utilised the Bristol Siddeley (later RR) Pegasus.

As this seems to have turned into a discussion on VTOL airliners I found these photos of the AW.681 project. It has 4 x Pegasus engines in wing pods. (Note that one is a model & the other an artist's impression.)

I don't know what football has to do with the price of fish. You seem to be arguing for the sake of it. If you have something positive to add to the original topic I suggest you do so.

Check this out.

Whats negative about asking a simple question? I feel like this forums resembles a english school or something, seems to be too much hidden contraints. If your not the subject I'm taking too, then don't post back. Roll Eyes

Again, in-relation with the stupid harrier V.S JSF debate (which some people on this forums, can't control and respect), Both aircraft I see are excellently designed, even thugh the JSF is not in productional service. The harrier has it's downsides, along with the JSF. I also, don't really see the point in including a opinion about looks on a fighter in-relation to combat effectiveness. Roll Eyes

I still don't see what football has to do with this topic. It doesn't affect me one way or the other as I'm not a football fan. This seems to be a personal attack on me for some reason. I have no idea what I've done to upset you.  I never professed to be an aviation expert but having worked in the industry all my life I do know something on the subject.

It's an accepted fact that the Harrier is the only operational VTOL aircraft at present.  I mentioned it in my original reply as one of the very few exceptions to the rule. Now please let the matter drop.

And yet you still fail to give a reason for the comment at all.

It's called having a little light hearted fun, but as often happens people just take things all too seriously around here... Roll Eyes

Back on topic, it's remarkable to see the resemblance between those two artists impressions, and what would later become the more practical reality - the HS. 146/Avro RJ family. Smiley

Now, has anyone mentioned the time the Sea Harriers came up against the F-15s yet.... Grin Grin Grin

Tee hee... Grin

what the hell is your problem?
You've been an ass to anyone who's asked you a legitimate question in this topic.
My advice pull your head out get that chip off your shoulder and learn some manners.

Indeed. It also struck me that with 4 x Harrier engines it would be a tad noisy. Hardly a Whisperjet. Shocked Wink

LOL, this is almost funny. "Chill out, or get over it". Roll Eyes

Well this is my last post, in this topic which has no simularity between airliners that hover and jets such as the JSF and harrier, now people which can't control their thoughts. Whoever post next which has no relation with the topic has obliviously no life. Tongue

Wrong.  You made a disrespectful comment, which I replied too.  That's not off-topic.

I'm assuming his football comment was in reference to the PSU-OSU game yesterday, and while kinda wierdly placed, I wouldn't get pants bunched over it guys.

WIG Planes don't hover, and the A-90 uses its 10+ wheels when moving on land at slow speeds. The 'Caspian Sea Monster' couldn't taxi on solid ground at all, same as the 'Lun', as both machines didn't have wheels.

Yak-38 wasnt what you call a success... apart from the awful payload, the lift engines had the tendency to melt the deck when doing vertical takeoffs or landings, even the heat resistant areas.

The Yak-41 (or Yak-141 which is the same machine) is the predecessor of the JSF design. Even the engine exhaust turning mechanism has been copied from the russian plane.
See video here. Dont forget to look at the burning asphalt when it does a STOL takeoff.

Some Light GA planes can hover while landing... given that there is enough headwind. Think about Piper Cub / Supercub and the An-2

i kniow thsi wasn't techniqually hovering but maybe it was a wrong in the terms used by FSnovice's friend and did his friend actually means stuff like floating
