hey,

I really loved that shot from crumbso, and it looks like I'm not the only one!
so what do you think, should it go to the gallery?

Although it is a very realistic shot I think this one does not belong in the Gallery. I feel that the shot sould've been zoomed out more so it would show the entire chopper. Also the edited black corners does not add anything to the shot; it makes the shot too dark in my opinion.

Rather than saying "Oh that looks soo real" take a look at the complete shot, not only the detailed model or photorealistic skin ...

see it that way:

you'were flying your baron from an island to another to go fishing, then you get caught in a huge storm, with no way to escape.
you try to go through hoping everything will go allright, but you get lightining striked and your engines shut down.
bad day...
you have to ditch... and spend 18h in the water waiting for somebody to rescue you.
you have nothing to drink or eat, and have to swim to stay alive.
you're getting really really tired, suffering from lack of water...and sleep deprivation... you start to give away, getting sleepy...
you hear something...
you look up but you can't really see...
your eyes and your brain don't work properly anymore...
you just see that big yellow thing hovering over you, and realise you will survive...

that's a true story I've seen on discovery last week.
and that's what that shot is looking like for me.

I may get flamed/hated for this, but I really don't see what all the hype aurrounding this shot is coming from. What's so great about it? ??? Yes, the chopper textures are very nice, and its a dramatic shot. But the blades look strange, like they are  motionless, but have some blurriness around them. Is that supposed to indicate motion? The black in the corners makes it obvious that a rendered light filter was used, and makes the entire shot seem staged. In my opinion, it would look better with some menacing clouds in the background. Finally, composition wise, everything is tight. Like has been said, it is too zoomed in because of the crop job; the chopper has no room to "breath", and then there's that tail fin thats cut off....

While its still a very nice shot, it doesn't make me go  Shocked.
I think some of Crumbso's other shots in that same post were better, like the first F-4 shot, and the F-117 shot. I prefer both of those to this one.  Smiley

Ok, flame away, I got my flame-protection suit on.  8)

PS: As I'm sure you already guess, this is a "no" from me.  Wink

The black corners almost make it look as though a cameras shutter thingy wasn't open all the way.  Yes from me.

Thanks thebrelon, it feels so much better when someone else nominates a shot compared to nominating my own.

I can see why some don't like it but I still stand by the composition of the shot. It's supposed to feel slightly tight. I think it fits with the context of the rescue.

The rotors were meant to be like they would look on a camera with a slightly too long exposure, maybe I didn't do very well, I was trying to go for an effect like this:
...

The lighting effect was just supposed to frame the helicopter but maybe also works as a sort of psuedo-search light. Mainly it's for aesthetic value.

Ah well can allways do better next time. Thanks to all for comments and votes.

Crumbso,

You are right about the rotor blades, I take back what I said. Lips Sealed Seeing as I'm not that much of a photographer, I see what you mean now. After seeing this picture you just posted, I see that what you did was actually quite realistic depending on camera settings!  Grin

Hey it's no problem, it's allways cool to get differing opinions and see what others think. I can take criticism, I'm glad you took the time to actually look at it anyway lol.

I can't take credit for the photo though it's Nemo's 8)

Personally, I don't like it, I think the pic is far too narrow and there is nothing at all going on, it's a nice idea to shape the lighting with the helicopter but it's far too basic to make this gallery worthy in my opinion. Yes the graphics are nice and photorealistic but this isn't a realism competition, it's a screenshot art gallery.

However, a good picture will have motion blur on props and rotors. I find that it rarely looks good when you've got a frozen blade, especially on a helicopter.

And it's partly because of this that I'm voting no on this shot, as it looks very inanimate.

Also, if it's supposed to be the view of someone being rescued, the pic should be much more dramatic. And the door should be open. Grin

gonna have to be a yes from me, this shot is very dramatic and i like that!
some people are being quite harsh, in some posts i see criticism, not CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.
Nice shot anyway, well done! Cheesy

ok, it's been a week or so since I posted that, and we have a little bit more than 15 yes, and 2 or 3 no.
the 25 yes pass mark hasn't been achieved but we still have a neat majority of yes.

so, I think that, clipper, you're the one to make the decision...

thanks for voting, either yes AND no
