View the Japanese trailer here:

This movie looks like it's going to be awesome!  I just hope it doesn't disappoint like Makic's Thin Red Line.

Yes I agree should be a excellent movie and with Clint Eastwood  directing should be more to the truth than most Hollywood movies on this topic. The only other person I think could pull off this story might be Tom Hanks.

Im looking forward to seeing both of these when released and is the first movie I anticipate seeing in a theater in well over 6 years Wink

I've studied the Pacific War since I was a pre-teen.  Lately, the books I seek out are english language books discussing the war from the Japanese perspecive.  There's not many of these, but they're worth reading.  I'm currently reading Shattered Sword - The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway.  If you think this is yet, another book on Midway, you'll be very pleasantly suprised.  I've read about Midway many times over the years and basically, they all say the same things.  This book is not only fresh, but very well researched and discuss such things that I've never even heard of such as discussions on how the weather affected the battle.  I can't rave over this book enough.  It's not another book om Midway.  Personally, I'm of the opinion it's THE book on Midway.

Thanks for the heads up on this book, I never heard of it but have it ordered now looking forward to reading it!

I am a WWII buff and main interest is in the PTO and this will be a nice addion to my collection.

The book Flyboys is another great read with some chilling accounts of what went on on ChiChi Jima.
Back in 1979 I read a book on the battle of Guadalcanal, and for the life of me can not remember the title but have looked for it since then and still have yet to find it. But it too was like you describe Shattered Sword.

If I ever find it i will be sure to post the title Wink

Im almost finished with Clash of the Carriers : The True Story of the Marianas Turkey Shoot of World War II.

Pretty interesting, can't say it is the most exciting book I have read but anyone with interest in the PTO battles should find it informative.

LOL!

I have Clash of the Carriers and Flyboys in my library.  Both are really good books, but I didn't appreciate the moralization on the part of the author of Flyboys.  Another good book is Oliver North's War Stories II.  A Glorious Way To Die is another good one.  It's about the final sortie of the Yamato.

This is a good site:  www.combinedfleet.com

This site is run by one of the authors of Shattered Sword.  It's the most authoritave english language source on the Japanese Navy on the internet.  Nothing else comes close.

Same author that wrote Flags, but you can tell differences in his writing style in the two books.

Another good book on Yamamotos final flight is "Lightning Strikes by Donald A. Davis.
Opps sorry you weren't refering to the man, but it is a good book anyway, again not the most exciting thing to read but filled with some good info.

Thanks for the link!

I've been thinking about getting that book.  I'll pick that one up.  And a good book doesn't have to be a page turner is it's dropping info.  Info is good!

That's kinda how Shattered Sword is written.  Most of the time, it's a page turner, but at times, it goes into info that are by nature, dry reading, but it's invaluable to put the page-turner portions into context.  I have never read a book that gives so much background info on doctrine, procedures, and timelines that explain the whys.  Usually, the reader is given the whats and whens and are offered opinions on the whys.  Parshall and Tully backs up their theories and dispells common held theories with exhaustive explainations.

One major myth they dispel is the Japanese carrier decks were not spotted with a strike package that was to go after the American acrriers.  They were spotted with the Japanese CAP.  The strike aircraft were still in the hangars.  And he soundly backs this up  by discussing Japanese carrier doctrine, Japanese procedures, what could and what could not take place based on timelines.
