This project has been dancing with problems for a long time, I can't see 558 flying now due to the simply astronomical costs (whichever sum you believe from the various sources) they STILL have to pay despite all these years of  donations etc. I hate to put a downer on things and someone will probably have a go at me for saying this but I don't see there being much chance of the Vulcan flying again.

Don't get me wrong, I'd really LOVE to see it return to the skies as much as anyone but sadly I've become disillusioned with the way the project has been handled (mainly it's PR bein vague and unfixed).

It always was going to a problem - not many civilian organisations have had experience in try to operate a four engined former nuclear bomber...

As for the costs, no one is denying that they are unrecoverable - the whole point of this last ditch effort is to ensure that the huge amount of money expended already hopefully will not be wasted.

It is also well known that the person responsible for the finances is on holiday, but the staff at Brunters are still working very hard on the fundraising. Mr P who came in for a lot of criticism at the beginning of the month is in hospital for an operation too, which obviosly hasn't helped.

People can keep saying how badly the projects been run, etc etc, but there are now effectively 12 days to save the project, so maybe they'd be better viewed after 31st August... Smiley

There is a response from the HLF at the bottom.
Quote:
Dear Sir/ Madam,

We would like to thank and acknowledge all your readers for sending emails about saving the Vulcan. We would like to reply to each of these individually, but as the emails have all originated from your address and we do not have individual email addresses, we can not. Perhaps you would be able to forward this response on to all those who have emailed us via your website on this subject. We are logging all the emails we receive about the Vulcan.

The Vulcan to the Sky Trust was awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant of £2.73million in June 2004. This grant is for the restoration of the Avro Vulcan Bomber XH558, plans for it to fly for another 10-15 years and for it to be kept at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford. An accompanying education programme is also planned which will tell the story of the Cold War.

The Vulcan to the Sky Trust is doing a terrific job restoring the Vulcan Bomber and we have been impressed with their ability to stick to the proposed timetable for getting the aircraft up and running. However, the Trust has let us know that costs have escalated and it is having problems securing additional funding.

We are currently in discussion with the Trust as to how it can best take the project forward.

Regards

Lucy Regan, Information Officer, Heritage Lottery Fund

This is very much what I've just PM'd to Craig...

The last paragraph and line of the text are the most pertinant...

The fact is, the level of support for the project has got HLF talking to VTST. That is a good thing.

As has been said countless times before, £2.7m of HLF money has been spent on the project. If the project were to fail now, it would be HLF to get the worse publicity in the press - VTST would no longer exist. Also, given the money, the aircraft will fly, barring a very unexpected major problem (ie, very unlikely)...

People like you who are too young to remember it are the exact reason the project shouldn't be allowed to fail.

I posted these links elsewhere, but I think these are two good reasons why it should be supported....for those too young (or not fortunate enough to have ever seen one fly in person):

such an amazing sound, I do still remember see'ing it fly and I cant wait to again.
It must be so tempting to just get that one in your vid airborne. Any reason why that one isn't being restored to full flight status?

Money. You have to remember that before it went in for overhaul, XH558 was a fast taxying example too. Part of the restoration process, for BAES and all the OEMS had to come on board has been the full "major" service.

'558 also has the advantage of living indoors... Smiley

Have a read

About XM655

It is the youngest Vulcan still in existence, but CAA issues grounded her from almost the day she went civilian. She would probably have been the best candidate to get airworthy again, but was left in the open for a long time neglected, so it is no longer economical

[ edit - CAA not insurance issues ]
