Okay, got it. I had to uninstall SP2, defrag, and do a harddrive cleanup, then reinstall SP2, defrag again, reinstall all updates, and it now works.

Overall I'm very happy with FSX. With my setup I got a constant 12FPS with everything absolutely maxed, and 35FPS with everything in "Ultra High" with a resolution of 1024x768x32.

So I must say I am very happy with what I am seeing, and as soon as I get a second 7900GT then I will be completely satisfied with max everything and around 35FPS. The one thing that I found disapointing was that FSX isn't taking full advantage of both my cores. Its loading the first one fully, and only giving the second about 5% of the load. You guys with dual core processers should take a look at that.

Cheers

Yes I do mean logical cores, and I did get a new motherboard, the ASUS P5ND2 SLi and yes hyperthreading is enabled.

My AMD also loads one core before it uses the second one.

With the 7950 installed I average right at 40 FPS at medium high and a res of 1680 x 1050.

I tried it maxed out and averaged about 25 FPS. I will turn my resolution down and see what happens.

Am curious to see how your 7900 x2 works out

As am I, but it will probibly be november before we find out. I have a long list of Airsoft and other stuff that I need to buy for events in the upcoming month, so with the exception of a 320GB SATA drive, cus my 80GBs are full, its going to be a long time before Sheila sees any hardware changes, unless I get a $200 bonous this month. In that case, I will grab that second 7900GT and we will find out sooner.

Cheers

I set the resolution to 1024x768 and everything I could at ultra high. I did not move the sliders, will save that for later.

With the lower resolution I averaged 30-35 FPS.

Due to a screw up on an RMAed 7800 I have a second 7950 coming. I got a little excited when I got the news.

The reviews I read on the quad SLI were not that good, but I want to find out first hand.

Would love to try this in Vista but there are still no drivers for the 7950.

Well I can tell you right now that the Vista hardware acceleration really sucks.

As for quad SLi, yea that kinda took a nose dive. It was too expensive, and no one went for it.

Remember you're only running a beta version of Vista. So don't go expecting too much from it by way of performance.

In fsX, I heard the second core is used for the scenery, and there isn't much scenery in the demo :S Maybe over land it'll be utilized better?

Assuming your driver support is there and baring DX10... you will have the system FSX was designed to run on. I would run above 1024x768. Run it at the native resolution of your monitor. If it is a CRT and not LCD, and assuming it ca run 80-120Hz refresh, bump the refresh rate up.

@ Cam
I dont know if you saw the thread I posted with the FSX.cfg but you should give that a try as a base for setting up. On a 7900GT and without SLI I suggest leaving the LOD radius @ 3.5-4. and the airport/cars detail @ medium

Yep...

99.9% of SP2 related issues stem from initial install and maintenance problems

I kinda figured you got the SP2 reboot bork the first time you installed it which is where most people get bit.

That would be great - thanks. My XP Home installation operates through a Netgear router with a built-in hardware firewall, although I do have the Windows firewall disabled.

Wink

I am sorry I have not gotten back to you on the security settings.. This week has turned out to be rather busy.

I started to put together a list and then realized that I needed to refine the post to assure no one gets locked out of their system. There are different levels of security XP can be set up for and I am developing a thread post which will address them with proper warnings during the critical steps so everyone can decide how far they wish to go and still well protected.

I should have it posted this weekend.

Native resolution for this monitor (LCD) is 1680 x 1050. With the processor I have I will be quite happy if I can run everything at high.

Ultra high would be nice, but not necessarily a requirement with me.

You probably already know, however If you drop the resolution make sure it is an even factor of the native res.

The demo is nothing like the real deal when it comes to being smooth and stable... you won't have any problems with your system assuming you get the right driver support..

Also, if you have not already done so.. check out the AMD website for the latest dual core optimizer and driver released in June
