Landed on Moving Carrier! (Read 2455 times)

Thanks for the hint NicK!

I swapped the carrier for the 25ft power boat - and the bay was then littered with the blooming things - all moving!

...

As you can see from the wake, this one is moving pretty fast - so I landed on it in the Bell!

As you can see, the sim objects have a cfg file - and it's clear from the carrier that it is intended to move

PS, Rollerball, see you have added aircraft into FSX, I let FSX install to the "C" drive to its default directory setting and I can't find the Aircraft folder. It seems not to be in the same place as FS9. Can you help please?

Gotta be quick though. They go ploughing across the  bay and then turn and stop. They start up again after a delay so best to quickly slew across to one that's going at full steam and land a bit quick,

Obviously it'll all be a bit different in the real thing - blimey, we'll have battle fleets with support ships and gord knows what. So with modified flour bombing I can see scope for some fantastic 'naval combat' addons

Look in the Microsoft Flight Simulator X Demo\SimObjects\airplanes folder.

How great would a combat sim based on this be? Moving decks and targets, landing on a carrier at night, in a storm with the thing moving after being shot up on a mission. Come on M$, give us some guns!!

Already been done in CFS2. This looks exactly the same to me.

Thanks Matt - sorry, missed your post first time round but Doug answered it. Did you find the folder OK?

Before installing 3rd party aircraft take note that you will probably need to paste a copy of envmap.bmp from FS9\texture into FSX\Texture.

It seems like adding bits to FSX is going to be a little different from FS9. To save lots and lots of questions and repeats of said questions, would it be possible to have a "sticky" thread to cover this until we all get up to speed.

I think this has been mentioned that no, there isn't. Microsoft wanted to expand their shooting games enterprises into the Xbox series. Or so I read in the CFS3 forum.

When I first looked at the pics, I thought:  That's the FSX Jetranger?  Its crap!  (cuz of the VC quality)

Then I realised, there isn't one in the demo. Tongue  Stupid me.


in some screenshots ive seen, the aircraft carrier looked more like the alphasim model (good quality), but how come the model in this post's screenies remind of a slightly upgraded FS2002 carrier?  I hope its just the demo version, or else im gonna get the alphasim enterprise...  (I wonder how they'll get AI working on a moving airport?...)

It's been a lot of playing but with a serious aim. It's all given quite a lot of info about scenery design for FSX and it's pretty obvious that although the demo carrier is pretty good compared to the default FS2002 and FS2004, there is plenty of scope for designers to add some fantastic moving ship models to this new sim.

I added the Stennis as a static model. Paul Clawson who created the package included the mdl file and as soon as we know how to add it into the sim (we'll need the SDKs which I'm guessing folks like NickN might already have seen) you'll be seeing models of that quality sailing around in the sim.

The FS2004 3Wire didn't work (not surprisingly) but if a default version doesn't come with FSX, it will only be a very short time before an FXS 3Wire comes out because the 'technology' is now well understood from previous sims.

And that's the whole point. I'm not saying that designers were amateurish or unknowledgeable with the work that was done for previous sims - they weren't. But the fact is that the technology that's being used in current computer games and sims is awesome compared to what was possible only a couple of years ago. And the new breed of designer (and I don't include myself amongst em) have grown up with it and can deploy it probably as well as the guys who created the sim in the first place.

I'm really looking forward to when FSX comes out. I think we will be seeing some amazing work appearing from designers - and not just aircraft. It's been 'easy' to create amazing aircraft for some time - POSKY, Mel Raffin, Kirk Oulson, Ito to name a few just at random have been doing it for a while. But the weak link has been the scenery to go with their aircraft. Folks like Gary Summons and many others have done fantastic work combining stunning scenery with moving objects - with the tools that have been available. Now the power of those tools is about to increase many-fold and we lucky so-and-sos will be the ones to reap the benefit.

Moving scenery...  Missions with waypointed AI...  Self-shadowing...  DVCs...  Reflective water...  Massive hard drive requirements...  Improved physics...  Bump mapping...  Reflective paint...

All these things are gonna make the addon developers drool (they're probably drooling now).

I thought about making a mission, where you drop candy (like the flour bombs) around Chiang Mai International Airport, like on children's day (in Thailand, on children's day, children can go to the airport, walk around, and pick up candy dropped in little parachutes, by A-10s flying overhead...).  That would be pretty unchallenging, unless I put targets...

With moving scenery, I could make children, parents, and other stuff move around the airport...  How cool would that be!
