When I'm flying online there's a problem with the other a/c location. Here's a little drawing because I really don't know how to describe it :

...

As you can see (you see it don't you? Grin), the other a/c seem to jump away from their trajectory, often kind of stepping back. For example, sometimes I'm following someone, and all of a sudden his plane jumps out of sight. I don't know why it happens and at first I thought my wifi key was the problem because one day I'd flown without seeing that problem happen, with another key, but know I'm wired to the router and it's still happening Sad. Maybe it's because it lags, I have between 700 and 1000ms of latency, which is enormous, but yet, I'm not totally convinced. Also, I assume my dsl 256KB connection is fast enough and provides enough bandwidth so I really don't know what to look at now.

Besides (maybe should I post this in software but it might be linked to my precedent problem), when I'm playing or running programms which need a lot of CPU ressources (antivirus, games,...), I seem to momentarily lose my connection because I see msn disconnect. I don't get kicked off FS tho.

Any help for those very annoying problems would be greatly appreciated Smiley.

Cheers
-Seb

I know what you mean and I don't think it has anything to do with your system or internet connection. Like you said it's the other aircraft that jumps around. I see it everytime when I fly online. It has probably something to do with the speed of the internet connection of the other person you are flying with. For instance I see Fozzer's aircraft jump around all the time when we fly online. Knowing that he is on a 56K dail-up connection that is probably why that happens.

Simply put it's LAG ........ caused by a combination of distance ... equipment and connection speeds. Even at the speed of light you will see a difference over distance ..... add to that the quality of equipment and everything is compounded. There's absoulutely nothing you can do about it so don't fret.

Yup... I see Fozzers plane do that too.

Only those with a good broadband connection seem to "steady" in flight.

When you are connecting to a server look at the "lag"  or "latency" that is shown in either FSHostSpy or the default MSFS multiplayer connection screen.  If this number is something like 200-300...... expect jumping of lots of aircraft no matter WHAT type of connection you have.  The data packets are taking a lot of time to get through to the various connected computers... and that makes the positin information of the aircraft get a bit out of real time.

I look for connections that are under 100 for smooth flight.

best,

.....john

On my 56K connection, the only time I experience "jumping aircraft" is when all our aircraft are very close to the ground and there are lots of scenery objects that the computer has to cope with displaying, as well as the aircraft.
As an example; flying nose down, closely following another aircraft to land, at an airfield containing many complex objects.

When we are flying in close formation in a clear sky, there is no such problem... Grin...!

A mixture of close multiplayer aircraft, and close complex scenery creates the problem, otherwise I have no difficulties in smooth flight on 56k dial-up*.....Wink...!

P.S. The worst examples, by far, are the Sim V "Airshows" where there are many stationary and moving aircraft amidst a lot of complex scenery...!!

Paul,

YOU don't see it....... OTHER pilots do.  Wink

The last European tour hop I joined into, when I got within about one nautical mile of your aircraft, you were in front of me one second, behind me the next, along side of me the next, 1/2 mile away the next, and so on.  At one point we almost (or did) collide when you popped up right where I was.  Yours was the only plane exhibiting that behavior when I got close.

It is the nature of how the handshake and data throughput is done.  And it also is affected by how people have their sim's online transmissions set up (other player sees animations, and etc.).  The more data that has to get through, the more important fast transmission and reception are.

The more PLANES on screen, the closer thye are to the viewer, and the higher the data bursts being sent (animations), the more important the connection speed is... and the more "hopping" you can see.

best,

.................john
