Haven't downloaded the demo yet, but then as I haven't got SP2, it ain't an issue. Yet. So how is people's experience with installing SP2? Does it really slow your PC down? Mine is 2.0Ghz/Radeon 9200SE/1Gb RAM which runs FS9 OK, but wouldn't if SP2 slowed it down...

Bad news to hear in another thread that FS9 planes couldn't be loaded...

You should have SP2. It works fine for me on all four computers we have with XP.

The same goes for me...SP2 bogged down my system like crazy...I didn't know what the heck it did, but it was weird...I deleted SP2 immediately and then it worked fine...I hated it from that day on...and I don't give a bull if MS said it's necessary... Angry Wink

I managed to install a Mirage 2000N and a MiG-29 from FS9, and flew them around without any major display issues (just a couple of leaking textures inside from the Mirage).

Ben,

That's encouraging. Did all of your XP computers have SP2 as standard, or did you add it afterwards?

One of the critical steps that many folks miss is that you actually have to reboot the system more than once to allow the install to finish.

Actually, it's not really the user's fault, because no where in the installation instructions do they TELL you that...

Like many, I resisted the SP2 update until late in the game. Like others have said, performance was negatively impacted...

...until I shut down the machine and restarted one more time!  Low and behold, there were THREE additional 'installs' that needed to execute, after which the performance was not just back to "usual," but had actually improved significantly!

Thanks for the info, n4gix. How did you know that there were three other installs waiting - did your machine tell you when you switched on again, or did you have to go looking?

Thanks! The SP2 thing is suddely looking more attractive.

SP2 is really advisible.

Without it you are seriously risking getting trojans, malware, spyware etc.

It would be a shame to get your FSX installed and spend ages setting it all up only to have to rebuild the entire machine, because of some nasty bit of muck that has no removal tool.

Let's not loose site of the fact that it's a somewhat crude and incomplete reprsentation of the final sim with several  beta bugs and many omissions.

Actually, I'm somwhat amazed that MS even released such a poor represention of the final product.

There are a number of us out here still waiting to know if FSX will actually install and run with SP1 only...!
Because if it wont, it will mean purchasing, and installing a new, very expensive, version of Windows XP Pro SP2....
.... which costs twice as much as FSX .... Shocked...!
Personally, I dont have any problems with Trojans, Mailware, etc, etc getting past my present protection programs, so SP2 is not necessary...or wanted...
...and the download of SP2 from MS is much too large on 56k Dial-up...

About the Free SP2 upgrade disk?...don't even ask!....Wink...!

Paul....OEM Win XP Pro SP1.... 8)...!
