Do you live outside the US or did they make an amendment to Part 61 that I didnt know about?

Yeah, I'd be interested to hear how you got it, considering most of us are restricted by federal law to 17.  Congrats however Wink

There is no specific regulation in regards to that (that I know of), I believe it's anyone, at any age.

To take the controls I dont think there is an age, you just have to have the PIC right there with you. But to receive instruction I think its like 14 or 16. It's probably in FAR Part 61 and maybe a note in part 91 somewhere. I havent checked in a while.

i think you can start instruction whenever, however you need to be 16 to solo, and 17 for private pilot certification.

I believe that for licencing/certification purposes, only hours logged after your fourteenth birthday can count towards the licence. Doesn't stop you having lessons early, just increases the cost...

I thought the UK rules were minimum age 12. Minimum solo 16, so the youngest pilot license can be obtained at 16. I think it is rather young myself, when one has to be 12 before even allowed in the driving seat of a car.

According to the US FARs (it's all in Part 61):

Solo: 14 in gliders or balloons; 16 for anything else.
Practical test (and thus the license):
16 for gliders and balloons, 17 for anything else.

Hmm... glider or balloon pilot, perhaps? Or are we talking about a driver's license (but that's 17, isn't it? I don't remember) Grin

Nothing in the FARs about "Strings, pulling of"...

...or "Legs, pulling of"...  Roll Eyes

Drivers license in the US is 16, new law has raised number of driving hours from 25 to 50, but nothing about age.  still is 16.

In Australia you can take your checkride whenever your instructor feels your ready, but you can't get the liscence and therefore privileges until your 17th birthday. Also you need to be 16 to get an ASIC and SPL. Which you need both of before your allowed to solo.
