Hello All... Wink...!

I am curious, as usual...Wink...

Whenever I download files from other sites, the file size is given, and the downloading progress is shown on the progress bar....
But when downloading a file from Sim V, the file size is always "unknown", and the progress bar remains blank...>>>

...

The block shown in the progress bar here is just a scrolling block to indicate that the download is actually working... Wink..!

Any idea why this is...?

Paul...work in progress... Wink...!

Hi, Ash... Grin...!

Ta for the reply...

Funny thing is...

Firefox is my only Web Browser, and I have no such problems with all the other sites I download from....
So maybe it's something to do with Firefox and the YaBB Forum program... Cry...!

The progress bar and file size is very useful for dial-up users. It indicates the time left, and how long it is going to take...very important!...Wink...!

You been at that vino again Paul? Downloading files has nothing to do with the forum.

PS. Why don't you clear your download history? Click that Clean Up button.

...explain to my why it only happens with the Sim V downloads, and not other sites...Wink...!

It is very useful to know the downloading progress on 2-hour, 56k Dial-up...*
..to get some idea if you can make it before the time runs out... Shocked...!

The down-loader above does not allow "Resume the download" once the connection is broken...  Cry...!

(It is quicker than "GetRight" tho' for downloading speed...)...Wink...!

Paul... 8)...!

* lucky you with expensive Broadband...Wink...!

Good on ya Foz, dead right.

It also helps us poor people in this respect.     Last night I started a download, from AVSIM,  but everything was running so slow it showed a potential 7 hour session at those speeds.    At least I was able to cancel without wasting time.

I have no idea but it has no connection in any way shape or form with the forum as you seem to be suggesting.

I agree but as I generally download files on IE I don't have the problem.

Not being a naturally argumentative sort of chap, it's times like this when I wish I hadn't asked such a simple question in the first place...Wink..!

Hello, Foz;
Long downloads with a 56k dial-up a bummer when the connection kicks out?
Pity my 45k dial-up Tongue !

I just tried this, just for you: I've installed Download Accellerator Plus and downloaded a couple SimV files. It took me a few seconds to figure out a quick way to be sure I was accessing the correct file:
clicked on the download link in the item,
then clicked properties,
highlighted and copied the ftp;
opened DAP,
clicked its ADD button,
pasted the ftp in the resultant URL band
and proceeded as normal --
file size and download rate display
--and--
download resume supported!

Try a download accellerator program. Wink

Ta, H.... Wink...!

I remember I did have DAP many years ago....but lost it... Wink...!

I have been using "Getright" as a down-loader, but for small files it always seemed much slower than my default Firefox one...
...but for larger files I have had to use it because of its "resume" facility.... Smiley...!

so...

I am installing the DAP program again...see how it goes...Grin...!

I never fancied the idea of paying my ISP twice as much! as my 56k Dial-Up for the benefit of Broadband, just for the sake of the occasional large download file... Wink...!

If I need a very large file downloaded, I pop round to see my next-door's neighbour's Wife, and with my offer of a cuddle and spot of passion, she downloads it for me and pops it on a blank CD, on her Broadband connection.... 8)...!
...sorted... Wink...!

Paul...with ways to overcome problems...
...when Hubby is at work....8)...!

When i was on Dial-Up, It was costing me (well, my mother actually) £15.99 a month for the unlimited use. That was with AOL. At the moment I am using Tiscali broadband which is £14.99 a month for unlimited use, and it's nearly 10 times as fast (512k).
Next year I might be changing my ISP to sky who offer a broadband package to their existing customers for £10 a month. And that's their most expensive one at around 32X as fast as my current broadband package.
broadband in the UK is getting a lot cheaper it seems

As one of the original Freeserve customers, (now Wanadoo/Orange) I pay £9:99 per month for 56K 2 Hour Dial-Up with unlimited use (24/7).....
...and NO sign-up contract!... Wink...!

Any other "Broadband" package is more expensive, and also has many hidden restrictions!...
examine the small print!
.... Shocked...!

When unrestricted, high-speed, no-contract Broadband is the same price as my £10 Dial-Up connection then I may consider it... Wink...!

Paul....just waiting... 8)...!
