Well there's many.
Best one
has to go to Real Air, for their Spitfire XIX.
IRIS F-4 Gr.2 Phantom II is a
close
second.

Aerial Foundary's F18s are rather nice. Closely followed by the Iris Harrier.

I'd go with either the Lago Tornado or the Iris Phantom!
If you want something REALLY different then the FS Aerosystems F-117 is funky 8)
There are two types of aeroplane, Spitfires and everything else that wishes it was a Spitfire!

HEY! The RAF still has a Spitfire on it's roster! Therefore it's a modern airyplane!

Low flying is when you
have to dodge the trees

It largely depends on what you like to fly. If I'm flying from a carrier then it's an F14 every time. The F16 is great if you want to throw your plane around the sky. I wouldn't have a F18 on my hard drive regardless of quality because I think they're hideous and ugly. Some people like attacking a ground target with an A10 by literally flying between the trees, others think the A10 is boring because it's too slow. SR71 is extremely fast but that's all it does, which isn't for everybody. Many people enjoy flying STOL missions with a C130. Aerobatic teams like Red Arrows or Thunderbirds are military too.
What sort of flying do you want to do? High or low? Slow or fast? Fighter/bomber/transport?

Uh I know you said ASIDE from the LAGO F-16 but that probably is the best one!
Still, congrats on getting it!

Okay time for my two penneth. Depending on your defination of modern, the F117A by Just Flight is good.
If you mean jet then the Aerosoft A10 is good the Captain Sim (Aerosoft) F104 is very good (Difficult to land). If you want something larger the Captain sim (Just Flight) Hercules is very good, but the newest military aircraft is the A400M which dosen't exist in reality yet but people say it is a good model.

I like the Captian Sim C-130. Its a fantastic model and great flight dynamics, however it all depends on what you like to fly. for me it depends on my mood
if i want a good flight were i could possibly land anywhere i'll go for the C-130, if I want to go fast and be able to move F-16, if i want carrier ops, its a coin toss between F-14 or an F-18. Al depends on what you want to do.
