I solved this problem with ease, though it did cost me €179, but it was the best €179 I have ever spent. Gütersloh Germany to Huelgoat in France (near Brest) is about 1200km
Two small boys on the back seat and a 12 hour journey.
In car DVD player. Two screens, each strapped to the front seat headrest. Not a word was heard from the rear.
If you have children, a long journey and the means, I do recommend this.

A easier and cheaper solution is to leave the kids somewhere else Grin
I never cared for the DVD player or video game system in the car, if they are bored give them a book. That dvd player that is not mounted physically to the vehicle WILL become a missle in the event of a crash possibly killing the kid(s) you tried to keep entertained. If there is a mounted dvd player chances are likely that the disc itself will dislodge out of the machine when a impact occurs, then you have the screen itself shattering throwing glass into the face of your child......

Most don't think of this but the less "stuff" you have in the car the less likely it will end up in someones face if a crash were to happen Wink
All the saftey features in cars now days seem almost pointless when the car companies are adding stuff or after market products that hangs from the roof or mounts on the back of the front seats all possible items that can be thrown in the face of a passenger, and all in the best interest of "the children".

I can vouch for the DVD player ....... and books ...... and hand held games consoles. Although the LEAVE THE KIDS SOMEWHERE ELSE option is by far and away the best solution.

Well, I did my research too.
It is not free standing, it has no glass and the screens are designed to "give" in the event of an accident. However most importantly, three point harnesses for the kids.
As for a book when travelling, the best way I know of to make a child puke their guts up over my seats. Thank God for leather!
