At 4:17 pm (EDT) the first words were spoken by a human on an alien world -

"Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed."

6 1/2 hours later, at 10:56 pm (EDT) Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on that alien world -

"That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind."

All our classes were cancelled, and everyone in school went to watch the live coverage of the moon landing in the library because they had a TV there (a black and white TV, of course, but then the transmission was b/w as well).  I was 8yo and was deeply impressed.  Scary to think that was 37 years ago, I feel old now.

If by "conspiracy theory" you mean thousands of people working thousands of hours to coordinate one of the most extraordinary events in history, yeah, I'd like to see them.

I would hope gryshnak's school cancelled classes that day because it was a Sunday.  Landing was 4pm EDT, 10 pm (or so) in England.

You know the conspiracies.. People who think the whole thing was staged and no man ever went to the moon..

There's no reasoning with them...

I just ignore them because they are morons.   Wink

Basically, in about 1979 or so a movie came out called "Capricorn One" and it was about a faked manned Mars landing.  That film has inspired many of these "theories."

There are those who still believe the world is flat.
The question is, have we gone over the edge or have they?

This is one of the reasons I miss the competition with the Soviets, there was a good long time when crazy programs got funding so that the first object on the moon would have "Made in USA" instead of "CAeNAHO B CCCP"(Cerylics dont show up) Stamped on it somewhere. Or any number of other things. I'm sure NASA got a big cutback as a direct result of the end of the Cold War.

By the time Armstrong emerged from the LM and stepped onto the moon 6 1/2 hours later, it was already Monday afternoon in Australia where I was living at the time.  You don't forget an event like that so easily  Smiley

That's why I remember it so distinctly being Sunday evening in Florida.  My apologies for doubting your power of recollection.

The real tragedy is that having touched the moon, we then let it go.  I saw a very good analogy on Discovery Channel once - one of the people they were interviewing about the Apollo missions said he was driving to work many years later when he noticed a small dog chasing his car up the road.  This dog was really trying hard, putting all his energy into catching the car.  So the guy stopped.  The dog caught up, sniffed the nearest wheel, marked his territory in the usual fashion and walked off, showing no further interest.  And this guy thought to himself, that's exactly what we did with the moon.  We put all our effort into catching it, gave it our best shot, and when we finally got there we pissed on it to claim it, then we just walked away.

Well, just yesterday-the leaked "Project Orion" which is intended to be the name of a CEV lunar landing program.  Who knows if it will ever happen but apparently they are in the process of designing a new booster called "Ares I" ("Ares V" will be a Mars shot booster).  I would imagine if the program actually happens (who knows, these things tend to get cancelled), a landing will happen within the next 15 years or so.

Don't worry Richie, this moron will keep his big mouth firmly shut this time. I think we've done this subject to death. Roll Eyes
Except to say that the opposite was true. The conspiracy theories inspired the film. Tongue

The object of the exercise had been achieved. Beat the Soviets to the Moon by the end of the decade. There was no other motive & no point in continuing.

Hey now Hagar, you know that I have always been very impressed with your wisdom...and that you are no moron.  We have discussed this topic in the past and if I remember right that you agreed that the landings did actually occur-that they were not stagged.  I remember debating that the government could have pulled it off if they had really wanted too, and discussion if the whole program was really necessary but in the end I thought you agreed that the landings did occur (but then again, maybe that was to shut me up Grin).

I'm not one who claims that the government couldn't have created a conspiracy to fake the moon landings, but I don't think they did.  All the "evidence" that these theorists come up are easy to explain...plus, if they had faked the landings-why land 6 missions total.  Why not just one, or only a couple-why go clear to 6 and risk getting caught in a lie.

Not much doing at work today, so I surfed some of the "Lunar Landings are fake" websites. It killed an hour or so and at times made interesting reading. But all I can say is these people have been out in the sun way, way, too much. Undecided

I know I have said this before, but there is a movie from the 1970s called "Capricorn One" which is where a lot of these "theories" were probably originally inspired.  It's actually a pretty good film about NASA faking a Mars landing.  Although it is a bit dated and features OJ Simpson as one of the astronauts, its deffinately a fun film.
