Saw an article in the newspaper saying that airbus announced the A350XWR, or Xtra Wide Body. WHY!? Why does airbus constantly feel that bigger is better? Can somebody PLEASE explain to me where they are going with this? I just cant seem to figure out how airbus plans to make money.....

It's to provide competition for the 787 which is wide bodied. Though it's still many years off. Barely out of the concept stage I believe.

It's A350 XWB. There's no big mystery about it. I believe they revamped the original design to compete with the 787. I suspect they took the opportunity to announce it at the Farnborough Air Show this week.

The XWB is just to appease customers who complained about their "narrow" fuselage on the last design. I believe that it was set up for 8 across seating and the 787 is 9 across. So the XWB is now a whole new airplane featuring 9 across. At least Mr. Udvar-Hazy from ILFC is happy with it and he was one of the original vocal critics of the A350.

I'm sure the eXtra Wide Body is in comparison to the current A350, not the future 787.

Whatever the reason, it's still marketing. Similar to what AMD did with how they market their processors. an AMD3200 isn't a processor that runs at 3.2Ghz, but a processor that actually runs slower, but appears to run at the same performance as the competator's processor that actually runs at 3.2Ghz.
Marketing! 8)

Its that old marketing ploy of "Throw the name out, add a zero to the model, get an X anywhere in there where it will fit and make sure to tell everyone that the origional model is great but this one is greater!" Lots of companies do it.

It's not a 787 though. Presumably its XWB is referring to its relative size to its A330/A340 cousins...

I recently read that the A350 XWB will have the largest passenger windows on an airliner. I've tried looking for pics on the net and can't find any yet. Does anyone have pics of the XWB with these large windows? ....just curious.

Nice. A bit of one-upmanship... Boeing claimed the same when they introduced the 787! I wonder how big the windows will be on Boeings next offering...

Next, Boeing and Airbus will offer a sharkfin tail and a casino and shopping arcade on their planes!

And then issue a revised artist's impression a year later...
