When the first computer game came out, it was only available to those who had deep wallets to afford a game, let alone afford a computer that was no powerful than my calculator yet more expensive than a jewel. During the time, it was considered unheard of to even see 3D model of a plane flying over a paper-flat surface that supposed to look like scenery. Then it was considered unheard of to even allow two FS users to play online together because of how dial-up was at the time.
Now here we are today with FS9 sitting on our hard drives that are at least more than 80 gigabytes in space and the sim is so realistic that it makes Pac Man look like a digit on a calculator. We have all taken these advancments so much for granted that there are those who have practically forgotten how lucky we are to even have such graphics.
Here I sit in front of my computer flying a Cessna over a 2D-like terrain with a blue blotch that suppose to represent water while the "square" clouds loom overhead. That's right, I'm talking about FS98. Then came FS2000 and all the others after it. Every time a new version of FS comes out, I time my time to stop what I am doing and look back at all the previous version we have all played and how all of those old versions were once considered "top of the line" at the time.
I can imagine that 10 years from now when a new version comes out, many of us who are young now will look back and say "dang, I can't believe that I ever liked that old sim". It's incredible how technology has advanced in only a span of 21 years since my birth. Many of us once called FS9 as FS2002 with addons. But before that it was us calling FS2002 as FS2000 with addon and so forth. How many of you have ever noticed youself doing that?
Again, it's incredible how technology has advance and how many of us took it for granted. And it's no surprise that FSX is going to be heavy on the systems considering how other companies Sony, Microsoft, etc. are now making game consoles that can put our current hardware to shame. I believe that mankind has now reached a point in the technological evolution where we have no choice but to make a great leap forward in our lifetime rather than just take small steps if we wanted to enjoy the new technologies that are so far ahead that it feels like the early 1900's when we were still learning how to fly.

from 4MB video card's to 8MB's and so on. Less than a year ago a 256MG card was about as good as it got, then we got SLi. then all of a sudden they hit us with 512MB and 1GB video cards. The same can be said of RAM and mp3 players. Now it's almost difficult to find a 64MB mp3 player.
very interesting topic choice Katahu

This is the kind of topic I would sometimes come up with, but everyone would usually dismiss it imediatly.

Those who dismiss it "are" the kind of people who take things like technology for granted.

It's why I tell myself that in fifty years we'll have 50" screens, curved at 45°, graphics cards with 32GB of DDR6-RAM, CPU running at 12GHz with multiple cores, 128GB of RAM, etc..... maybe
. Maybe pcs won't be anymore, replaced by newly architectured "computers". We can't even imagine what it will be in 50 years... Maybe we'll be looking at the 41099th page of the screenshot forum and say 'wow, lokk at those pics, they're awful!!!' and someone like you, Katahu, will post exactly the same kind of thread
.

Anyone remember VHS tapes? Casette tapes? Or you older members, records? Seriously, technology has come really far, and I for one am glad to be living right now when I can witness its progress. I was talking to my dad the other day and he was wondering what huge changes I would see, like the way he went from working with a computer the size of a room to a computer that he can hold in his lap

while I agree 100%.
Its our impatience and constant unhappyness with the quality of a product, that pushes these things forward to even better levels.
As for FS2002 being an upgrade on 2000, I would love to meet the person who said that.
It was quite possibly the biggest leap the series has seen since wireframe was turned into solid graphics.
