I just updated my PC (other one got pinched) and wanted to try IE7 Beta 3. I tried IE7 Beta 2 and liked it a lot, however, FS9 didn't!  Shocked the kneeboard would lock the system anytime I tried to pull it up with Beta 2. I'm planning on trying Beta 3 but don't wanna waste my time if it kills FS9 (my favorite proggy)  8)
Thanks
Mick

there is a method where you can use beta 2 (not sure about beta 3) without installing it
it is at http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2006/04/test-internet-explorer-7-without.html

this way you can use the beta while FS can still use the normal IE

Wow... Nice... thanks EirePlane  Grin I'll try the workaround on Beta 3 and see what happens as well.

Have you considered using the excellent "Mozilla Firefox", as an alternative browser to "Internet Explorer"...?

While Firefox is just a brilliant browser, at some point you are going to come across a website that wont work properly with  it and you will need to use IE. May as well have a version better than the "bog standard" version 6.

Either way, I still prefer to use Flock because of the blog tools and other extras and because it's built on Firefox

lol, yea it looks a little "my little pony" with all the pastel colours and stuff, but it is only in beta. with a little tweaking, you could probably get a few firefox themes working with it.
the most useful things on it are probably the way it lets you manage any feeds you subscribe to and how it can automatically store your bookmarks online, especially handy on a multi-boot machine

I just updated my PC ...

Good news folkies, I tried Mozilla and liked it a lot. I'll run both for a while to see which one wins out overall.

It did have a couple of uninstall issues (mainly cleanup), but I attribute this behaviour to the lame software that came with the PC, and not mozilla.
Installed and tested IE7 Beta 3 and actually couldn't "break it"....  Hmmm I must be gettin daft(er) in me old age!  8)  Beta 3 not only works well with FS9, it actually IMPROVED the performance (and fonts) on the kneeboard! The uninstall process is neat and orderly with little or no issues that are noteworthy. Bill Gates must have got my email on the subject (there go the "voices" again)... Wink

The only wee bug is that on the first screen, you are prompted to "close all running programs". Then,  it insists on being "connected" during the install process to download imediate updates, etc etc ad nauseum... But for a 12meg download this is expected. You MUST be connected or the install will fail...I was NOT amused  Angry

Hmm somethin from "Mother Ship" (MS) actually works.  Now I'm REALLY confused  Grin.

I don't say this often, but I actually can recommend IE7 Beta three all around, and can verify that it works fine with "operational" aircraft (no bugs) in FS9.

Thanks a million for all the help Fozzer and Eire, just don't blame me if you try it and it blows up your system
8)
Mick

PS. Have to agree with Fozzer on Flock.. It's at V1 Beta 0.7... I'll wait till the wine has a bit of vintage on it before taste testing... But I will give it a try. I work part time as a crash test dummy so why not eh?  Grin

Hi Mick... Grin...!

If you decide on Mozilla Firefox, don't forget that there are lots of very useful add-ons available via the Mozilla site...
...dictionary/spell checkers, ad-blockers, wine/beer offers, penis extensions, etc...etc.. Wink...!

Once you use Firefox for awhile and do some system scans and realize that you no longer finding useless junk bogging down your PC (spyware/adware and the likes), you see page load times decrease dramatically (even on dial-up) and you can change the looks features and add what you want (highly recomend Flashblocker no more annoying Flash! Adblock making internet advertising a useless thing to persue, lmao) you'll wonder why hasn't MS ever figured this out!

It is all common sense, you get the browser you want and not be stuck with all the crap you don't Wink

By all means keep IE just don't use it, lol. There are still some sites that have'nt got enough common sense yet to realize that the internet users are tired of being told what to do, how to do it, or when you can do it. Or that we are tired of constent security issues requiring constent updates and patches Wink

Only time I use IE is for Windows updates, any site that won't let me browse on FF is a waste of my time Wink

Politically Incorect you and Fozzer brought up more points than I can investigate in 48 hrs. In addition, being in the business since 1989 I see ALL software across ALL platforms as a sort of Apple and Oranges propositions. It's all binary coding and money (spent) on development to package a specific product to a specific clientel (sp?), but nothing more. I publish my "preliminary beta" work here. Please forgive the length of this posting. It should  be understood that I am currently on a RAS (Dial up) connection 80 miles in the desert, and have banished ALL spyware etc to vaporware. AS SUCH ALL FINDINGS ARE HELD AS SUSPECT AND SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED AS TRUE DATA AS THERE IS SIMPLY NOT ENOUGH INFORMATION TO ESTABLISH A TRUE IMPERICAL BASELINE.

A.) Baseline: Page load speed from a dead start (clean boot.

IE7 Beta 3
a.) Allows and has administration function for "add on's"
b.) Resolves DNS issues faster behind a proxy server utilizing NetBios. (Why this is true is beyon me)Angry
c.) Homepage (earthlink.net) loads in less than 60 seconds
d.) Demonstrates few DNS resolution issues (when set to auto resolution or not)
e.) Handles web accelerator proxy with speeds approaching 568.7 KB with an average of 90.0 KB on Dial up from my location Demonstrates few DNS resolution issues (when set to auto or not)
and settings.
f.) Allows file transfer at approx 15KB - 100KB faster than other browsers tested.

Firefox V1.5.0.4
a.) Allows and has administration function for "add on's"
b.) Demonstrated issues resolving  DNS, especially regarding proxy server implementation. This included "Auto Discover enabled" regardless of protocol.
c.) Homepage (earthlink.net) occurs in more than 90+ seconds (through proxy accelerator which I fault here)
d.) Demonstrates DNS resolution issues and has general issues with DUN accelerators, (whether set to auto detection or not).
e.) Handles web accelerator proxy with speeds approaching 32.KB with an average of 0.17 KB (netstat live data) on Dial up from my location.  Demonstrates severe DNS resolution issues and appears to have generalized issues regarding "wait states". this browser is well geared for the "high bandwidth" market. Of course, user infamiliarity with program settings should be considered here.
f.) file transfer is slow and cudgy with refreshes needed often. Could not establish resolution on non proxied (accelerator assisted) issues so the NON CONECTION and non RESOLUTION issues are here as well suspect at the present time.

All in all, Apples an Oranges, and all that. I will stick with MS IE7 Beta 3 for now. Truth is, my dialup sucks, and Earthlink went down the tubes since Sprint bought them out. This being said... pay no attention to the results above as I am CONVINCED that over 98% of ALL issues I experience on a RAS session are directly related to the ISP and the included OEM software on my maching (HP Pavilion a1350N) and NOT the browser.
Grin
thanks for you patience in this WINDY post. You guys are tops in my book. Thank you for your input. Because of your direct input I have learned TONS of info and become a better person because of it!  Grin
The testing continues....

Shame on you Woodlouse!  Grin
I kid here (and no I'm NOT a goat) there is an axiom in the PC business I live by.  That is, If it aint broke, don't "fix" it... since I support Macintosh AND Intel platforms I encourage folks to stay with what they know best. This is the only strategy for support personell.  Ugly things can happen outside of this montra.  Grin
