A £1 billion contract to build a new generation of helicopters for the armed forces has been announced by the Government.
The Ministry of Defence said it had entered into a "groundbreaking" partnership deal with AgustaWestland to build 70 Lynx helicopters.
Ministers said the deal will keep design and engineering skills in the UK as the new helicopters will be built in Yeovil, Somerset.
The so-called Future Lynx will be used for troop transport, casualty evacuation and battlefield reconnaissance as well as detecting and destroying naval craft.
Lord Drayson, Defence Procurement Minister said: "This will deliver the Royal Navy and the British Army an advanced, sophisticated helicopter to meet the challenges of the 21st Century.
Lord Drayson said the deal will sustain 800 jobs and represents "excellent value for money" for the taxpayer.
"The Future Lynx will have proven leading edge technology that will deliver better performance and an improved range of capabilities."
Under the contract there are options for an additional 10 helicopters. The new aircraft are expected to enter service from 2014.
The present Lynx helicopters entered service with the Royal Navy and the Army in the early 1970s.
They have been extensively used in Northern Ireland.
There are two types of aeroplane, Spitfires and everything else that wishes it was a Spitfire!

Ouch, I wonder if I should tell my dad about this or just let him find out on his own
Edit: He apparently knows and according to him, when he was working on this, they were actually planning 90 airframes, and an inservice date of 2010.
Good old MOD estimates and dealings

Its really only going to be a fresh coat of paint for the Mk 9's, the first pilots will think they have a glass cockpit, until they realise its just shiny stickers, and all they have for instruments are their eyes, and clear plastic windscreens.
But hey, the Lynx is my personal favourate helo so if thats what keeps it in the air, i'm happy for my tax pennies to be spent on it:)
