Dude, that was awesome!  You could see the rotors tear through the tailboom after they impacted the water.

But hey, I'd still say the test was a success... the helicopter floated! lol  (well, most of it anyway for the time being)

There are some choppers similar to that which settle onto water successfully (you look it up, i'm tired), but they don't float so much as hover with the belly getting wet. Very handy for water rescue, etc.
I think this pilot just didn't quite set up the approach right, due to error or the helicopter just not being able to do it.
I hope nobody got hurt- things sure got crazy when the rotors impacted the water at full throttle!!  Shocked

saw that on another site, it showed the chopper in flight and it suddenly belly flopped into the water. the pilot tried his best to lift the chopper back up which resulted in that "floating" appearance. his attempts to return the chopper to the air failed resulting in the rotor strike etc.

nobody was killed during the crash, but everyone aboard (13 people i think it was) died either en route to or during their stay in the hospital.

ill see if i can find the link

http://www.alexisparkinn.com/aviation_videos.htm

under the helicopers section about 1/3 down the page entitled "INTO THE SEA"

13 on board all survived but one. this site claims it was a joint japanese - russian rescue training deal gone wrong early this month.

Lots of other cool vids on that page too

Those old Sea King helocopters looked tailor made for floating on the water, complete with a nose that looked to be designed to cut through the water like a boat.

Mi-14 does float... thats why the side tanks on these have a different profile (same function as Seaking maingear pods)

These helos are quite rare, only other known operator outside CIS is the Polish Navy, and most of the pictures that you can find on the net are from their machines.

Visible differences compared do Mi-17 / Mi-8:
Fuselage bottom profile
Has two front wheel sets instead of one
Has retractable gear
Tailstrike protector has a flotation device

way better picture here

Isn't this the same incident? http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=genav;action=display;num=1...

The sea in that vid doesn't look as rough as I imagined from the reports.

Certain helicopters are designed to float. Many naval helos are designed to float for awhile should the pilot be forced to ditch. This attempt would have worked had the pilot tried to, or been able to, whichever the case, lift straight up, instead of start forward flight while the cockpit was still under water.
