Kind of goofy how they neglected to notify ATC of a canopy flying through the air, after which it crashed into a house....

Hmmm. I wonder how that happened. Lucky it didn't fall on someone or the sh*t would really start flying. Even so, I expect there will be a full investigation leading to more restrictions on warbirds.

I can't find any reports on the incident so can't comment. Not much ATC could do even if they had been informed.

Er, yep, and what exactly would ATC have done about it - evactuated every house in the region within the space of a minute of two?
I'm sure they had more important things to worry about, such as the structural integrity of the aircraft which has just had a heavy lump of metal and perspex fall off...
Poor chap in the back, at least Mr D in the front had a helmet an visor. Must have been very traumatic for them both...

Here is a rough translation from the local paper the "Neue Westfälische". Unfortunately stories in the German papers are like reading a boys own adventure
Unplanned ventilation
A daring pilot from England regardless of loosing his canopy, flew on to make a landing in Berlin. He made no SOS call over the international distress frequency
The "hobby pilot" from England (edit, stated in the first sentance, if you missed it) was flying a P51 Mustang out of England. He had started from the North Weald airfield and was on his way to ILA in Berlin-Schönefeld.
Over the town of Münster, 280,000 residents, for unclear reasons the canopy of the aircraft was lost. However the forward screen remained in tact and in position. The pilot flew the remaining 400 km and landed in Berlin. The district authorities of Münster want to know why the pilot did not land at the nearest airfield (edit, because some self important "person" would have impounded the aircraft and started a judicial process that would have lasted years, that’s why>
). The department of aircraft accident investigation from the LBA (edit, Luftfahrtbundesamt, German CAA) stated that flying without a canopy is basically allowed, however a radio call would be the standard procedure.
By the accident, no person was injured. Unfortunately, the roof of a house and a take-away where damaged. A piece of metal 1.9 meters in length landed on a tennis court 1 meter from a lady waiting to collect her daughter after tennis practice.
The district authorities of Münster reported that the damage caused was not extreme and would just require the details of the pilot so that the damage could be paid for.

I challenge any of them to go and try and talk in a Merlin engined cabriolet... If there had been a grave danger of the aircraft falling out of the sky then maybe a call would have been given...

A Merlin engined cabriolet...nice turn of phrase Charlie. As I said Boys Own. It does not matter if it is a political report, Herr Schmitt has grown a prize winning leak or a car crash, it always starts, "it was a dark and stormy night".

PS Fozzer, I hate to be a smart ass, but how about testing the button before you kit up

I couldn't help wondeing what the German media makes of all those little swastikas painted below the missing canopy. I thought it was illegal to display the swastika in Germany on a German aircraft, never mind an American one.
