I Like Flight Simulation!
I have Dx 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) with XP/SP2 and it works fine.
Personally, I'm getting a little tired of MS wanting to constantly update every component I have so I don't update unless I see a good reason to (beyond MS telling me I need it).
To answer your question the update won't hurt but I doubt it will solve your problem.
I'd suspect a corrupt file. It's also the easiest problem to fix. Extract atc.dll from CD and replace the file in your FS2002\modules folder.

I am not sure which disk it is on but it will be in a .CAB file if you open one of the .Cab files you can see what files are in it once you find the right .Cab file all you have to do is to highlight the file you want and unzip it to a temp folder
Do not unzip straight into FS
.
Once unzipped just drag it to over to the correct folder and over write. 8)

So what have i done.
I installed the new "atc.dll" file from the CD2 into fs2002 modules folder.
I also cleaned the dust inside my pc.????
And i make some different settings into settings, atc, show text....
I made a flight and everything went well...
hope this will work,
best regards,
Karel
