I am thinking about getting FS Repaint by Abacus, but I still want to edit the textures with Photoshop and use FS Repaint as a viewer instead of starting and stopping FS. Is this do-able? ???

Thanks

To do that, you don't even need to buy FS Repaint.  You can just get the downloadable trial and use that.  It has all the features of the whole program, you just can't save any changes.

The External editor option is not selectable in the Demo version.

But you can still make it work.  For instance, you work a bit, save your data and then open up the FS Repaint and load it, then see what needs fixing.  Might take a bit longer than just using the external editor function, but it beats having to load up FS every single time and see the tiny little mistakes you make, then having to shut 'er down and adjust, then restart, shutdown, restart, shutdown . . . restart. Just remember that models that incorporate some sort of "protection" may not be able to be opened in FS Repaint - for example - Abacus' own "Premier and Platinum" collections.

For some reason, Rick Piper's recently released HS.748 also cannot be opened in FS Repaint.  It's not an issue that it was made with FSDS3, because other FSDS3 models can be opened up.

All in all, I like the program.  I use the built in editor to do pixel touch ups and work on the alpha channels, without worrying through DXTBMP.

I tryed it, and I just keep it open while editing and refreash it whenever I make a change. Works well. I also messed with the editor it came with, and it was so easy that I am now thinking of buying it. Grin

Do it.  The ability to see your changes in real time is brilliant.

I once needed to match a pattern down the side of a fuselage where the texture map was split into two pieces.  Using the built in editor I could see where I was placing the pattern in real time so it matched up perfectly without any messing around.

Another huge advantage is finding which bit of the texture map covers which bit of the plane.  I used to spend hours hunting for the texture for a particular bit, like the chequerboard pattern on the nose of the Extra 300 - it's the same colour as the background so it looks like a blank space in the corner!  With FS Repaint I just drew a square, filled it with lime green, then dragged it all over the textures and watched in real time to see where it was going.  It only took a minute to find the area I was looking for.

FS Repaint saves time and hassle, that's worth the price alone.
