I posted this question (url below) up in the "Aircraft Design" forum.... 'cause I thought that was the best place for it.  But so far, not getting too many definitive answers.   Wink  Thought I'd try scaring up some "knowledge base" down here.  Take a look at:

http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=airc;action=display;num=11...

So if anyone can tell me what exactly these switches do on an EFIS panel...... I'd appreciate it.  I think the panel in question is from a 777.....but not sure.

Thanks.

best,

..........john

VOR/ADF L = Captains  radio (either  NAV1 or ADF 1)
VOR/ADF R= First Officer's radio (either NAV2 or ADF 2)

In the 737's, those switches are labelled VOR 1 and VOR 2 etc. Which is  more logical to me Smiley

Simply put you get pointers (narrow for VOR/ADF 1, wide pointers for VOR/ADF 2)

Info in lower corners of the ND (Frequency/station ID and DME)
VOR info = Green
ADF= Cyan.

Remember that each crewmember has an EFIS control panel (I actually think you know this) so basicly it replaces the need for an RDMI  Smiley

EDIT: Threw in an Airbus comparison just for fun since they have basicly the same principle

EDIT 2: Rockwell Collins Flightline 4 example.

I see that the 747 example actually has the VOR tagged as "R" and the ADF tagged as "L" in the info boxes.

It also looks like I had it right...amazing. Smiley

It's how it's supposed to be Silver Smiley

ADF L = Captain's tuned ADF
VOR R = F/O's tuned VHF NAV receiver.

But like I posted above the 737's have the VOR/ADFs tagged as "1" and "2" respectively. Which makes more sense if you ask me  Smiley

THANKS! Nexus and Silverfox.

That is the kind of info I was looking for.  (....info for which I was looking.  Wink)

Let me see if I understand this........

On the Captain's EFIS control panel (one of two panels) there is a "L" switch that controls what shows on the Captain's display as to what Nav 1 and ADF 1 are tuned to.  Can I assume then that the "off" position shows nothing?

On the Boeing MFD this is displayed on the lower left of the screen and the appropriate pointers appear on the Arc / Rose display.

The other "L" switch does basically the same thing but shows what NAV 2 and ADF 2 are tuned to.

So these switches solely affect what is displayed on the MFD........ and take no other active "control" function.

Is this all correct?

Or...... do these switches also,at the same time, act like activating the NAV function on the autopilot and engaging the autopilot?  In other words, so when the "L" switch is "off" you are manuallly flying the plane, but when  the "L" switch is set to VOR....... the plane is tracking that VOR (or ADF respectively)?

I am guessing that the latter is not the case, since then if BOTH switches were "on" and set "L" = VOR and "R"=ADF........ then the plane would not know WHERE to go  Wink.

Sorry I am so dense about this one.  Smiley

John, the buttions on the EFIS control panel has nothing to do with VOr tracking etc, they have no control of aircraft navigation or tuned NAV radios.
They are simply a visual guidance tool that the crew can select to see or not  Smiley

You said it yourself, they only affect what is displayed on the ND.  Smiley
If you have both buttons in "OFF" mode, the respective NAV radios are still tuned and funcitoning.

Thanks Nexus.

Now I have to figure out how to emulate that between FSUIPC and FreeFD.  Hopefully it is possible.
