I believe I'm right in thinking that they either ditched or bailed out when they got close to the carrier.

Wow, i've never seen that one... looks like he's about to ditch. Probably wasn't near land at all, as that plane (Grumman Avenger torpedo bomber) was more than likely carrier-based.
In fact, I'll wager this photo was taken from a ship...

If it was then it was a very very high ship and the plane would have hit it.
