To Anyone:
i think it's the ideas people make for their nominations, not the quality. Because: if you first have to pump $1000 into a good setup before you can make it to the finals or even win, only about a quarter of the forum members have a chance!
so if a shot has a great angle, sunset, view, color use, plane, scenery or whatever, but the quality isn't that good, i think we should look at those things in the first place
Cheers,
Mees

Well, that exactly what they look at don't they? Someone could a have a $10000 rig and still make the worst shots...Screenshots are all about art...the angle, setting, lighting...all these come into consideration I suppose during judging...

I completely agree with that.. but you must realise it is already being done! There have been fantastic finalist shots over the months which have made really far, but wern't that great of a quality
I mean.. i have a 2 year old Dell, which has had its best days... it still works perfectly so i dont intend to change it any time soon, but the graphics card is just completely sh*t
So i would also really appreciate if there is a little more attention to those shots in which the composition is really good, but the quality is a little less!

AFIAK, myself and Mr.Mugel do not have the greatest systems at all. In fact, looking at your system specs, my computer is actually worse than yours!

We have all heard this before, it does not matter what your set up is!!
Look at Mr. Mugels' blimp shot!!!!
TOTALLY AMAZING!!!!
It is dark, different, and speaks volumes!!!!
Don't tell me you need a million dollar rig to get that shot!

I have to be honest but it is better to have a decent pc with flight sim because it has so much to offer.
It's an expensive sim so why play on a crappy rig ???

My system is not exactly cutting edge either. I've had it over 4 years and have upgraded small amounts since then.
My system:
Intel Q6600@3.6GHz, Corsair XMS2 4GB DDR2-6400 (4-4-4-12-1T) , Sapphire 7850 OC 2BG 920/5000, X-Fi Fatality, Corsair AX 750, 7 Pro x64

I made it to finals once back when my video card sucked, so I don't think that it's really an issue.

Well personally i think it is quite hard, when it is voting time, to not be influenced by the quality of the shot! When i struggle to choose between two shots, and one is of a much better quality than the other, the quality will, almost definately, influence my end decision.
I know its not the thing to do, but it happens. The quality just adds this extra 'umpff' to the shot
So yes, I agree it shouldn't be an influence, but its hard not to.
( I hope you all understand what i'm actually trying to say...)

Thanks for the words Dave, but it just shows that a simple shot can go that far, in my sig there are my specs, you wont find to many crappier PCs around here, I think.
But it works, I have fun with it, thatīs what itīs all about, and itīs creativity that makes a good shot, sure a high end rig can easier produce visually stunning pics, but thatīs not allways what the judges look for.
And I think many people seem to vote that way, too, look at the amount of votes I got, such a simple shot, with such a crappy system.
Thatīs what makes taking decent screens hard.
Letīs keep this contest on, I had many of these moments in which I thought my shot could have gone further, but it didnīt and thatīs the way it goes.
Allways remember, the contest is not only to win, not only for the prize, but itīs the fun you have, looking at all the decent pics entered, thinking about options for great screens yourself.

Seriously, its not the PC. I mean, mines pretty good, and I take good shots, but Ive never made the finals while people who have worse computers than me do.

FWIW......
MR. Mugel got my vote simply because of the fantastic composition of the pic.
As a long time photography buff, I learned years ago that composition is of upmost importance and all the fancy equpiment and effects can not equal a simple pic with great composition.
Mr. Mugel illustrated brilliantly that you do not need a high end sys to take great pics..

I aggree Buff, what exactly is your point?
I think the fact that two out of the three winners has a worse system than mine proves that screenshots are all about composition, not power.

It's probably not the quality of the rig that gets a screenshot into the finals. But I'm still not sure what
does
make the difference. There have been some comps here where I've looked at the finalists and known at once which should be the winnner (IMHO). Other times I haven't bothered to vote because I didn't think ANY of the finalists were that good. I have yet to figure out what criteria the judges use to select the finalists each month. But then, my taste in art is rarely mainstream.
Don't forget there are also monthly screenshot competitions at
www.screenshotart.com
, and not just for FS2004.

You're not alone there Gryshnak.
The judges do however, take their own volunteered time to organize the comp, mod the comp, select the topics, select the finalists etc. It's a lot of work and I'm sure we're all grateful for their efforts. It may be frustrating at times for some but we've all got to tip our hats to them nonetheless for their tireless efforts and the subsequent enjoyment the competition brings to us all month after month.
