Where is this rock? Also known as Devil's Footstool. For you young 'uns, it's the rock where the alien ship landed in the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." It's in Yosemite National Park, but to what airport is that close?

Hi rootbeer,
According to my (very old) edition of the Rand McNally Road Atlas of the USA (1991 edition), there is an airport at Columbia, 50 km. west of Yosemite National Park. A bit farther away, about 100 kms. south east of the park, there is an airport at Bishop, California.
Both airports are available in FS2002 (Columbia = 022, Bishop = KBIH).

Thanks! I can find Columbia, CA and I know exactly where Bishop is-- I've driven down Main Street there a heap o' times on my way to Los Angeles from Reno.
I asked my brother where Halfdome is. He didn't know beyond "It's in California someplace," which is strange because he's a rockclimber-- the kind that brings the rope up with him (aid climbing) instead of climbing up the rope thrown down from the top (toproping). He says toproping is for girls.

I must be blind or USA Extreme Landscapes failed to show it because I never found it. I flew due South from Lee Vining Airport in California and never saw it, even though the "Devil's Postpile" is shown on my map to be in Yosemite National Park and directly south of Lee Vining by only 20 to 30 miles. Can somebody find it and post a screenshot?

Rootbeer,
I believe the rock that you're looking for is called "Devil's Tower", located in the state of Wyoming. That's where the aliens landed in the movie "Close Encounters .....".
I'll let you figure out where it is in Wyoming.
Regards,
JerryH

Well, well...
Looking for something where you will never find it is oftentimes unproductive. No wonder I never found it...
Thanks.

I have found it. It is in the town of Devil's Tower, Wyoming. For those of you who'd like to see it, you can depart from Gillette, fly east and somewhat north toward the far northeast corner of the state. Estimating by the scale given on the map, I'd say it's about 60-70 miles from Gillette-- no more than half an hour by Cessna 172 and much less in an F-15.
I went there. It's not very impressive, or I was not in the right place. According to the flight map, I was in the right place, more or less. I saw essentially a right cone-- it's not flat on the top like pictures of it show.
