These old sims are still fun.  They were once state of the art.

I still fly FS98 most of the time. In my cockpit, that is. Software development is another story, has to work with all versions.
I have created a few planes that really fly by the book, and I did not want to recreate them for later versions.
The big improvement of later versions is of course scenery, and the looks of your plane. Controls, panels, you can do it all with FS98 and do not need a heavy PC for all your wideview screens.
Being inside the pit, I do not care much about the looks of the plane as long as it flies OK.
Scenery - I use Europe1 among others. There is enough to get out there, and I do not fly close enough to church towers to actually enjoy their ornaments. Once I am close enough to the ground to appreciate details, I have my hands full landing the plane.

Yes, I do still play FS 98.  I even have a copy of the _old_, version 4.0, where the _floppy disk_ says "For IBM PC's and compatibles".  I know, I'm ancient.  But for the features I like, its what I can afford.  For example, on the V 4.0, I get "standard" (for the time) flightsim,  plus a crop dusting scenario, a "war game" type scenario, multiplayer capability, and I can design my own planes. Smiley  So, if anybody knows where I can do multiplayer stuff with my version 4.0, please let me know.

Nothing is better than a classic. Most of the newer sims and other games may have better graphics (eye candy), but most lack the great game play of a classic. Sooooo.. I still play Flight Simulator '98, Doom, Doom 2, The Incrediable Machines, Empire Deluxe, etc, etc. What can I say, IMO nothing is better than a classic.

I wouldn't say I actually play with it anymore. More like test and compare things every now and then.  I actually have all versions FS1 thru FSX on my PC.  I use emulators to run versions 1 thru 4 and about version 5 I can run them as normal.  Quite a kick.

It's interesting to venture every now and then to older FS version forums just to see what possible could be happening.  Same type stuff just in a different version.  Reading a few posts above this of an old timer finally moving from FS98 to FS2004. Man, is he in for a shock!   Smiley

Have it installed and use it from time to time. Mostly for IFR routes. Not really the simulator for VFR, it is not. A great platform to teach about VOR navigation though (no default GPS), even if an update of the various worldwide VOR, NDB and ILS would be nice (yeah, I know, I have a dream Grin).

I have it on an old 500MHz P3 machine that gets dusted down once a year, had it on a laptop too - along with Crimson Skies/CFS-1/CFS-2/FS2002 until the 'HD' (and the 'LCD') finally gave up on me!. Sad

Probably played CFS-1 more thou' - especially over the firm's LAN at lunchtimes - happy days!... Wink

Probably because it's still cheaper.  The reason I've never installed FS2k4 is because it's too large a program -- FSX?!

I think this Block should be remove , eventhough FS98 is still well preserve Like brand new as my FSX box ,its too old ,this block should be use to instead FS98 should be all MSFS before FS2000, or MSFS From the last century, see how funny was the beginning o this game   Grin

or wipe it out..don't you think?

mostly because I don't see too much activity here, Three pages make this block _3 pages is all the histo0ry of FS98 .. Shocked   Undecided

There has been activity admitting to current use. As I told you not long ago, I retrofitted one of my CFS1 installs with the FS98 scenery files; mind you, the textures aren't even on par with the default CFS1 textures and default missions have to be tweaked (seems global warming has caused the oceans to rise more than thought since WW2) but I can fly the world in CFS1 without searching to install myriads of little add-on scenery files.

Aye, but the lack of troubleshooting inquiries only indicates that it's been much less problematic than your more recent big fellows.

If you want my opinion...

The FS'98 Forum isn't broken...

...so I reckon, don't try and fix it... Wink...!

I still have, and play, Flight Unlimited II, Pro Pilot 2, Fly!, Apache Longbow, etc,.....as well as the occasional excursion in FS '98, FS 2000, and FS 2002...

..and not forgetting the various Combat Flight Sim series... Smiley...!

...and even my 1982 Sinclair Spectrum "Tomahawk" Helicopter Game!...

So my life doesn't just revolve around FS 2004 and FSX... Roll Eyes...!

Paul....I'll play with anything involving my Stick of Joy!.... Wink... Grin...!

.....I wonder how many little Johnie's out there are happily playing FS '98 on Dad's ancient Win '95 Computer, with no problems?

I like it because you can still fly helicopters inside bridges like the Golden Gate bridge and Brooklyn  etc same with 2k but 2k2  and fs9 crashes the helicopter -- unless I am doing something wrong that I haven't figured out yet.  Also the WTC (rip) is still there and has a heli pad to land on

Yeah, I've still got it. It's like taking a kid fishing.
Teach 'em the basics and then show 'em the REAL FUN. Besides if they really like it, I  Wink 8)give them a copy.

Smiley That's how I first got into flight sim, my grandpa showed me FS2004 when I was real little. Been obsessed with it ever since. He always used to think there was something wrong with me 'cause the only thing I wanted to do was crash, typical six-year-old. Grin Cheesy

Maybe, unless in a time warp, just because it was there?

FS98 was my first flight sim, and got my started in this world of sim. However i now dont have it installed, which is a dissapointment, so i recently put it back on, and that brought back alot of memories.

Since FS8 scenery worked in CFS1, maybe I'll try it in FS98.
I now have FS95 through FS9 installed (FS9 takes up a bit of space but I cleared some of the unused off of my hard drives and did some rearranging). The main drawback I've had with FS98 is the often bland scenery texturing compared to CFS1 which was produced not long afterward.

The closest I come is I have a Beechcraft C90 and a Beechcraft B99 made for FS98 that I fly in my FS2002.  It's weird when I used the same planes in FS98 the props didn't spin like a turboprop would but when I installed them into FS2002 they operated they way they should.  It's very interesting.

Yes, but only occationally and with a joystick and Rudder Pedals with the same interest and zeal, to learn things ,I was flying the Cessna,Learjet and Jet planes with only a hand held gamepad. It stimulates a lot of the thrill which I enjoyed  as  it was in those days. Thank you for the opprtunity you have given by your present post in the Forums. Smiley
