Firstly the Branson offering to buy Concorde, dont believe the crap he spouted. Theres alot more to it.
Secondly, Concorde was scrapped because Airbus stopped supporting it for parts because Air France told them they couldn't afford to run the plane any more. It wasn't to do with how old it was or how modern its systems are( some of which are now only just being used in modern jets, thats how advanced it was) BA wanted to continue using it and were starting to make money from it again, but once Airbus pulled the plug on the parts that was it.

On another note, I was recently at Heathrow and taxied past a BA Concorde sitting in the grass in between the runway and the apron right off T3. Any clue why it's there?

That particular aircraft I think is G-BOAB and is the one of two BA Concordes that wasn't modified after the Air France disaster. They put it in storage hoping passenger traffic would pick up but the fleet was retired before that happened.
The other six aircraft are at these locations
G-BOAA - On display at East Fortune Airfield, Scotland.
G-BOAC - Retired to Manchester Airport
G-BOAD - Retired to Intrepid Museum, New York
G-BOAE - Retired to Granley Adams Airport Barbados
G-BOAF - Retired to Filton Airfiled, Bristol
Final flight for the Concorde
G-BOAG - Retired to Museum of flight, Seattle

Thats the one that was destined for terminal 5 but I believe they ran out of space and now its going to be a gate guard on the road leading into terminal 5.

There was a new Concorde in the design stages in the 80's. It was called Concorde "B", had leading edge slats, upgraded engines, larger wings, more powerful and quiter engines with no afterburner, increased fuel capacity, and a range of over 5000 miles. Aircraft 17 was to have been the first aircraft built to these specifications but since they had problems selling aircraft 11-16 they never built them.
Its a shame this aircraft never was built. Had it been I am quite sure the Concorde would still be flying today over a great many more routes than it older cousin, the Concorde "A"
