Of what use is the calendar beyond setting up the correct scenery (leaves on trees, snow on ground, etc.) for the time of the year?

Just for grins, I took it to the year 3188. It seems to have no limit. ???

So, with the calendar, you can set the date to significant events and watch them happen, provided MS has programmed them into the sim? That is so-o cool! I wonder how many are in there?

Setting the date also influances the moon, e.g. half moon or full moon.
