'Lo!

Quick question: Anyone know exactly what it means when it refers to CAT-I or CAT-III in regards to an F-16? (and why there doesn't appear to be a CAT-II? Grin )

Thanx. Cheesy

In what respect exactly?

I can think of three types of numbered "Cats" of the top of my head: Damage Cat after an incident (Cat I to Cat 5); Instrument Approach Cat (I to III); Crash Cat - the level of accident cover at an airfield (1 - 5)...

Mmm... ???

No; it doesn't refer to aviation medical exams either. Wink Grin

I honestly have no idea what it is supposed to refer to. It's an option in Falcon 4.0; FreeFalcon3 upgrade. It is a configuration of something - FF3 refers to it frequently and it is a selectable option in the config editor: 'Cat III Default'. I believe it has something to do with weapons loadout - whether a Cat 1 is A-A and 3 is A-G or something; I couldn't say.

I went online to see if I could find the answer and found plenty of examples of the term - particularly CAT-I; which seems to be the more common whatever-it-is of the two. The problem is that to folks who know the F-16; the term is so common no-one feels the need to describe what it actually means. Grin

I'm playing the sim on full realism settings; starting missions from full cold 'n dark configuration; full realism on the avionics etc. It is - to put it mildly - a major challenge; far harder than anything in M$ FS's. Whatever these particular Categories are; it seems to be not too critical since my jet flies and fights quite well without knowing - but since I'm going for full realism; I might as well learn what the terms mean.

Driving me nuts too! Grin

I just got Falcon 4.0 .  Cat I/Cat III does refer to the weapons loadout.  When you're loaded down with heavy stores you set the switch to Cat III.  This reminds the flight control computer that you've got heavy weapons on the pylons and it prevents you from doing stupid things like pulling 9G turns and ripping your wings off.  It also reminds the computer that your CG is different from that of a lightly loaded Cat I plane.

There is also a warning light on the master panel.  If you've got the switch set wrong (seems like it interfaces with the Stores Management System) it'll alert you with a lit caution light.
