Either Past Simple (it happened) or Past Simple Continuous (it happened and is still happening) methinks Grin
I spent most of yesterday afternoon teaching this and it has driven me bats so today I've got some nice "Civilisation" lessons.... aka talk about something and then watch a short program about it, e.g. racism and bigotry followed by Fawlty Towers "The Germans" episode. Can you believe I've been getting away with this malarky for 7 years? Grin

No - just starting to get a handle on Reverse Polish Notation to apply it to XML coding ... except I tried applying it to grammar ...  (not that the "children" of today are required to learn it since it would stifle their creativity and otherwise hurt their self esteem)

i had a couple run-ins with my history teacher because i couldn't understand that ancient empires became "known to man" when some european laid eyes on them.

Earliest recorded history was probably a human handprint in pigment or soot (or blood) on stone. Someone was trying to tell a story.
