Weird... I decided to update my nVidia drivers (been having a new problem with sim dropping to about 7fps about six to eight times when first starting a flight), and of course I had to reinstall coolbits, which I've been using for ages to "unlock" the advanced settings on the card.
Decided to get rid of my profile and start over, but didn't make any changes, really. Running an even lower core/memory clock spread than before...
Not sure yet if I've fixed my original problem, but for some reason I now have no graphics in the preview window in the Create a Flight or Select Aircraft pages. It seems elated, but I can't for the life of me figure out how. Even set the card at default settings, and it still does it.
Anybody have a clue?

Reinstall FS? I have no idea. Sounds like your FS got currupted somehow. Also run 3DMark. See if your card is dieing (however I doubt that it is)

And you also get a black screen with just the progress bar when you do start flight?

I also recently updated my drivers and have the same problem! Also Nvidia

When I drop down resolution to 800X600 it al works fine but at 1280X1024X32 it fails

No; once the sim is up and running everything's OK- except for the freezing every few seconds, but that clears up after about 20 seconds.
Should have known better than to try to fix this... Roll Eyes
At any rate, it's hardly worth a reinstall of FS9- I already know what my planes look like.
Wish I could tell you what to do about your problem, but I don't have a clue.... although i may reinstall the drivers or go back to the old ones; that may work for both of us.

I am using an nVidia FX5200, which has 4 AA settings, if I remember correctly they are 2x, 2xQ, 4x, and 8x. When I use any of the first 3 settings FS crashes, and when I use the 8x setting it wont crash but it does as you describe, it doesnt have a preview window...and it does this no matter what the resolution is set at  ???

You all need new cards. Its your card, not your FS thats the problem. The card you have cant handel the FS engine very well. 6600GT is the minimum anyone should have.

I dont think they had 6600s back when FS9 Came out, You need a Bare minimum of a MX 440 64mb trust me, I had one, ran better than this this Damned 6200 I have now........ So dont go on the min is something that wasnt out when game came along! and I bet you could do with an even lower card if you wanted! just not to the fullest of effects! Cheers, Gunny

I think it could possibly be your hard disk getting fuller, and load times (for textures and views as well) are increasing.

Not to mention that all this Driver updating usually ends in misery eventually.

I've been meaning to ask this before and had some shots ready..

...

...

It isn't due to hard disk space...It has been fuller at mine... After the sim is loaded everything looks fine!

When MP-ing when you oped the chat window make sure it is at the bottom of your screen since you will have a black bar...

like this

...

Those are my issues...

Drivers made it so I prolly gotta RMA my card soon! ah!!!!!!!!!!! Sucks..... these are what happened to my card then it just started failing in everything! I cant run FS in full screen and when I do, and load up like FSpas it turns it black and white and 70% of the screen is game and 30% is screen in back, so my cards shot! dunno why, worked fine till I did newest drivers (bout two hours) then died! Cheers, Gunny

So why has it never done this before in over a year of squeezing as much out of it as I can with FS9? Is it getting tired? I'm not being sarcastic... it's been pretty damn solid, even with my fairly recent CPU/RAM upgrade and tentative overclocking (all on a modest scale, for sure, but definitely pushing the limits of an old clunker like a 5700LE)
Just seemed related to the driver update... although I agree I could really use an expensive card, killer CPU, heavy-duty huge-capacity RAM, my own private island with airport, a fleet of fabulous aircraft, a trophy wife, etc... come on, Mega-Millions!!
Grin

Whatever... I am actually planning a pretty serious upgrade this year... haven't decided what exactly to get yet, but it may even be FSX-ready, if I make some good money in the next few months.
But I really would just be very happy to stick with FS9 if it would only run at full-kilter and look its best on whatever rig I put together.

your card can do it maxed, without massive addons then you might run into trouble rotty, Its driver related, I can attest for that, my 6200 worked damn good with stock drivers, installed 81.92 or something, and it hasnt worked right since, Reinstalled windows even and clean install didnt fix it, so drivers prolly really screwed it up or it was a big coincidence! Cheers, Gunny

nVidia drivers have a tendency of expecting more out of a card with updates. So your problem is that you installed drivers that were expected to put into a 6800GT or a 7800 series card, and you FX card or low 6XXXX card just couldn't take the pressure.

ATI does this tool, but you tend to lose features as your S-Video and second monitor plug, before you loose you GFX

Why don't you go and put the drivers that the card was boxed with and worked perfectly with back on your systems guys? Or at least go back to some driver that did work.

I'm telling you, 8x..xx whatever series drivers were just not optimised for your cards.

I suppose you all have automatic updates enabled as well, allowing microsoft update to screw up your PC's whenever it's automated evil arse is inclined to do so?

That probably goes for more automated software on your PC's as well, how many processes are running automatically now, 10, 30, 50 ?

It makes diagnosis a nightmare.

Imagine plugging a newly installed hard disk/op sys/FS9 into your rig, I bet your issues evaporate, providing you don't immediately link to automated updates and run tons of antivirus junk and every other automated, spying, "I am the most important bit of code ever written" software all over your PC.

Not only are automated programs a hassle, but how many times have you uninstalled a perfectly functioning driver for "the latest" piece of junk?

Someone else said it recently, and I'll say it again, when we first bought FS9, we were using old GeForce MX440's and such. They worked without issue, albeit, they were slow. It's not the hardware's fault, in almost all cases it's mis-configuration.

Like I said. Newer drivers were made for newer cards. Use the ones in the box until you buy a new card, in which case you can use the updates. Only those with the 6600XX and above cards can use the new drivers without fail. ATi the Xxxx series and 9800xx can use up to Cat 5.10 without problem. You need the X1K and X850 series of cards to use the 5.11 and above drivers.

This may not be a hardware problem, but with a good 16 pixel pipeline card (X800GTO) is out for only $150 why wouldnt you want to upgrade that rubbish MX card to something DX9?

Cheers

But now you have learned you lesson. You buy a NEW never been used or opened card from a reputive dealer (like newegg) and you buy a good card X800GTO / 6800 or better.

Refurbs may be $100 less, but they were returned for a reason Wink

Because I am often advised that my framerate problems (especially the "80 frames, freeze! 80 frames, freeze!" thing) are there because the card is pining for updates, or something like that. Maybe I'm just stupid. Who knows? Grin
I may well go back to the stock drivers (with coolbits; this thing is useless without a little boost), but honestly I don't miss the preview that much. And everything else is the same: that is, mediocre.
But all that will be rendered moot when I replace/upgrade my mobo, chip, gfx card, and RAM... maybe soon.

Nah, sometimes things are a driver issue, but I reckon it's a lot rarer than anyone imagines. There is so much rhetoric involved. Drivers are something the average Joe can fiddle with, so he feels he's useful in an otherwise automated and mysterious computing experience. Lets face it, the myriad of software, options, settings and background processes are enough to drive us all into rash actions!

It's nothing to do with a refurb card... drop your AA settings down to 4x... I've got the same prob btw...

I'm running SLI w/twin 7800 gt oc's at 1280x1064 settings... had the same prob before when i had a 6800 gt oc (all cards were from bfg)... when i changed aa setting to max... preview disappeared.  When i reduce it one notch... it reappears!!  Try your AA (antialiasing).  Lemme know what happens. Wink

Weird... I decided to update my nVidia drivers (been having a new problem with sim dropping to about 7fps about six to eight times when first starting a flight), and of course I had to reinstall coolbits, which I've been using for ages to "unlock" the advanced settings on the card.
Anybody have a clue?

You probably thought of this already, but my Invidia card did this as well. I found a few things wrong. I scrapped all the add on aircraft I installed that gave any sign of trouble. Then under the Troubleshooting Section of the Flight Sim menu chose Reset Defaults.

From there, you readjust your video, and reassign key mappings for joystick etc. This was a last ditch effort before reinstalling FS9 from scratch. I've done this 4 times now after botched panel tweaks etc and it worked for me. So far, I haven't had to roll back the origional install.

I'm running a dog slow (1.2Gig) and old Celeron based sys on an Intel DG815EGEW board w 512 RAM. The Nvidia card is only 128Mb, so my system is VERY sensitive to bad configs. I found most of the time, it was a bad guage install on my part, or configuration issue with the add ons that caused the situation.  Hope this helps

Been hoping to avoid that, but yes, it might work. Thanks.
BTW, the preview came back after I just reset defaults in the gfx card's OC program and started over there...

And... have had it that way for a long time, with no problems. The start-n-stop thing is relatively new. And resetting to defaults is not getting rid of it. Even tried changing the virtual memory cache size slightly... no joy.
I'm beginning to suspect an add-on or something; I'm not very thorough about noting before-and-after results, so it'd be hard to say what it might be. So far I've uninstalled a rather disappointing tree add-on (the last known change), but it still hiccups, about 7 times on average, whenever I begin a flight or resume flight after performing  any task in the "Alt"-activated menu.
Whatever... I appreciate everyone's attempts at assistance, but I'm back to average 28 fps, only slightly jaggy, and the hiccuping always stops after a few seconds... I can live with that until I upgrade.

Hmmm.

I don't have a preview screen, but it is only when I force max settings on everything via Driver with my 6800GT, regardless if I overclock or not. I expect this, as it has been doing this since the 60 series drivers (don't know before that). Other than that, everything works peachy.

Wink

Well what makes me that, the fact I contradict your advice alot, or the fact I know your advice is wrong and correct it?

You know Candle I have the feeling that you know what your talking about. But your ego, and Byass get in the way alot. Please if your going to tell us were wrong post the article that you found out such, not a web forum entry, but an actual article from a reputable site that tells us that we are wrong with our advice.

Cheers
Cameron

EDIT: Also if you would bother to read some of the information on the drivers ATi tells you that their are certain types of games you cannot play due to glitches in the programs. Such as FS9 takes a preformance hit with 6.2

He's gone, and I'm sorry I had to resort to such an unpleasant description of our recently banned new member. Among some more serious matters, he was advising our members to act out his fantasies, with little basis in reality.

Jeez, you guys really heated this thread up!  I'm getting a sunburn just typing . . . Tongue Wink

But on topic: I read most of what was said in here, but kinda glazed over a lot of it.  But I have been having the same problems, myself, ever since I got my GeForce 6200.  First run through FS, I set it on AA through the sim interface, which worked well for a bit, until I discovered the intricacies of the card.  So I set up the AA on the card itself, all the way maxed (4x).  But I started getting that disappearing preview thing.  So I slowly turned down the AA on the card, with the AA off in the sim.  Still the same thing.  No fix is apparently available for this, so we all must either do without the selection window, or go with the onboard AA FS is equipped with.  Since I haven't noticed a dramatic difference either way, I decided to stick with the aircraft selection window and let the AA on the card go walk. Grin
