That was fun. I could have gotten 4th place, but Ashar got 4th and I got 5th because...
I landed at the wrong airport on the final leg!

LOL! I was wondering what the heck you were doing...and then when I finally realised your mistake...all hell broke loose...I pushed my King Air to the limits...
Beautiful flying though all of you

It's from the fact I was in the lead and you were way behind me, same speed, same plane and you magically went 2nm ahead of me.. considerably odd.

Well, I decided to reduce the amount of fuel I carry so that my plane can take off sooner and fly faster. Less fuel, less weight, more speed. However, not enough fuel means not being able to reach the finish line.
I flew with 50% fuel. From that, I went a few knots faster than normal. In fact, I was bordering the established FAA rule of 250 below 10,000ft.

I was going a steady 242 KIAS, and Ice, you were right behind me the whole way to HE0T. On the way back I somehow managed to get so perfectly trimmed that I didn't touch my joystick almost the entire way, that might have affected it. ???
P.S. I have pics I was taking the whole way back while we were talking about that, just to show my speed, fuel, everything (see #'s 3, 4, and 5
HERE
).

I suspect there's a setting (or a combination of settings) involved here, because I can't get a King Air to fly at 242 KIAS, S&L at low altitude no matter what I do. Flaps up, wheels up, throttle wide open - what else is there to adjust? I'm not accusing Mobius of cheating - I'll let Ice do that - but I was WAY ahead of you both when we changed to the King Air and yet Mobius caught up with me as we reached HE0T and returned to HECA before me - flying the same plane at the same altitude with the same fuel load. I don't know how.
This has happened before. Last year I was in a cross-channel race and we all flew Lindbergh's Ryan NYP. The others made a tactical mistake and I gained a lead of almost 2 miles - can't lose from there since we're all flying the same plane, right? By the time we reached France they had caught up to me, and I only won the race by 4 seconds. Again, I don't know how identical planes can fly at different speeds but they do.

Well I was going up and down and up and down, which eventually made me go 250kias+ so I dont know what's up with that

I could get to 260 KIAS in a shallow dive, but this was just level flight. And I lost more speed climbing to altitude than I gained coming back down, so it wasn't really useful overall.

I think we need a rule that you must fly with 100% fuel from the start. These races need to be fair, testing pilot skill, not aircraft engineering. So for the next races, so that the playing field is even, no fuel or payload changes allowed.

Already checked that, Mobius and I had the same fuel load too.

although i wasn't racing this time.....
I changed into the King Air to keep Ashar company on the last leg to HECA with [WMR]Sir_Fuzz and i had this aircraft trimmed out and was flying steadily along at between 240kias and 260kias with
No Changes to the Config File
which proves that the aircraft in question is capable of this speed in level flight.
Also there May have been a problem of Lag in the flight which could cause the jump.

I agree...I realised that with the Anti-Ice turned on, I could only cruise upto 231KIAS...but without it, the engine's were pumping out a good 242-250KIAS speed range...and my plane is deafult...no change to the .cfg file except those repaints made for the races....
Thanks for keeping me company John,
Ashar

I just flew that leg of the race again, paying close attention to the anti-ice switch, and got 242 KIAS. But I doubt the difference in engine noise (remember my "lawnmower on steroids" comment) would have gone unnoticed. Not saying I would have known what to do about it, but I would have noticed it at the time.
Ah well, it's something to remember to check next time.

The next race should include the following rules:
1. All fuel loads must me 100%.
2. Unlimited Fuel: OFF
3. No changes to aircraft payload in the Fuel-Payload menu.
That way, the only things that can affect aircraft speed is how move your aircraft.
As for the case of the Ryan NYP, it's possible that those other players may have adjusted their payload and fuel load to a lighter setting for more speed.

Using the default settings, 1 and 3 apply already and that's the way I always fly.
With unlimited fuel, the fuel is still consumed as normal but the engine keeps running even when fuel reaches 0. Unless you're going to fly further than your maximum range, it has no effect.
