Well, it appears that you lads liked the airshow! Cheesy
Tweek and I wanted to know though - is it worth doing again next/month/year/whenever, if so, what we could improve etc.
We also want to thank all of you for coming to the show and having a fun time! 8) Wink

how about making it bi-monthly? I only got to see the first act before it switched servers but what I saw looked like it was going to be a good event.

It was great!  I suggest that we find something different for spectators.  The best thing would be if someone could make like a 1 poly plane (as in flat piece) and then texture it to look like a person.

I'm sure a nice low-poly AI plane would do, nothing special, an AI cessna or cherokee or something.

I populate all my airfields with the help of LAGO's "Flight Sim Enhancer", people, animals, aircraft, vehicles, buildings, vegetation, etc....
..'trubble is....everyone has to have the payware program installed...!
It really works then...!
(I like it)...!

Otherwise...
Someone would have to publish a scenery add-on, (similar to the above), for the proposed airfield, using whatever scenery designer program is out there...?
It's a good idea tho'... Wink...!

Cheers all...!

That was my idea, I said that at the time!!  Wink

Anyway, GREAT SHOW GUYS, really enjoyed it. Lessons learnt,

1. DO NOT try and have three high framerate heavies at the same time! (my flight) Even the high end graphic boys were in single figures!

2. Server. Seems to be alot of confusion about where/when/HOW, etc. May I suggest useing the MSN Game Zone? The games there can be launched by just a click of a mouse, no ip numbers or port noncence and we can lock 'our' game with a password so that only SimV peeps come in. The WSPilots server is a public server after all.

3. Better disapline with regards to the time table. Especialy with heavies, it's good to know in advance as they can be 'en route' or in the air paused just out of range so there isn't the mucking about trying to manouver, etc.

4. Speed. Seemed to me that there was alot of fast stuff going on. Good though it was, in a jerky multiplay environment it was "wow, oh he's gone..."! Maybe more emphasis on slower flybys and displays?

5. Sponsership, we could display advertising and get free food, etc. (ok, i'm joking on that one!) Wink

Again, Great day on the whole though, look forward to the next one. I've put some pics up here> http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=screen;action=display;num=...

Actually your all wrong! It was me who said, "Why dont we get someone to make a blank model or a simple cube for the spectators?" Twas a great airshow, I agree with the speed though, either we have to find a really good server or slow the displays down.

I'm sad I wasn't able to join you, but if you decide to do another later, hopefully...

As there are people from all around the world, why not to name one different guy each time to choose the display place in his country, so he would somehow be the host and we would be his guests. it would allow us to discover nice place in country we may not fly too often...
if you see the idea...

As it may sound like a good point, it's impossible to stick to the original time table, as people do have to leave earlier than expected, so they have to perform their display before the ones who can stick around. I created the original programme as one to work around, so at least we had some sort of order, with room for late comers, and.. 'early-goers' Tongue

Monthly or bi-monthly meetings sound good, probably bi-monthly while the SimV race season is still on.

A spectator texture sounds excellent!  A plane in FS9 can typically have 30,000 polygons, you could make a flat 2D spectator easily enough but why not a 3D spectator with about 300 polygons?  A small crowd (say 10 people, all variations on the same theme) would be 3,000 polygons.  10 of these crowds would take no more resources than a single plane parked on the sidelines, but look like 100 people milling about watching the show!  Anyone got the skills/knowledge to make something like that?

Having a theme for some of the airshows sounds good.  WW2, Golden Age, biplanes, gliders, ultralights, fast jets, etc.  How about taking a real airshow, putting the details on SimV, and recreating it using the same planes?

The server needs to be chosen in advance, and checked out to make sure everyone can use it.  Then stay there!  If it has to be MSN Game Zone, then so be it (I haven’t tried that one).  We don’t have the right to stop other people using a public server at the same time, if they want to have a picnic in the middle of the runway during the airshow there’s nothing we could do about it.

The start time was supposed to 5pm GMT.  When that time came, one or another flyer hadn’t yet arrived so everything was put on hold for 5 minutes.  Then someone else dropped out and we waited for them to come back.  This happens with the SimV races as well.  What happens at a real airshow or in a real race if one entrant is delayed or develops mechanical problems?  The show goes on without them.

FS9 (mine, at least) often suffers from a jerky display where planes bounce around the sky, back and forth, left and right, sometimes going underground or briefly disappearing altogether!  Other times they look like cardboard cutouts being wheeled along an invisible track.  I’m not sure if there is a solution, did anybody else see it like that yesterday?

I like the idea of a different country hosting the airshow each time!

Looking forward to the next one...

By starting at 5pm (or a bit later), many people had to leave halfway through the show to go eat.  Starting earlier or later to avoid meal times would be better.

Well i Didnt Get to attend the Airshow (seeing that i didnt have FS9) Cry

The MSN server Can only go 16 people at a tme so you would need multiple servers and find some way to merge them all together
wich, to my knowledge, is impossible from the user level
well i would kep on using WSPilot

I had a great time at the show, enjoyed watching all those great displays (all better pilots than me Wink) but there was a lot of sitting around. I know that there were a lot of displays to see but some folk flew two or more times so maybe everyone could do a couple of displays just to get in on the action a bit more? I had no server issues at all and no real frame rate hits, but then I have a fast broard band connection and fairly high end machine so I would not have expected any to be honest. I think bi-monthly would be great for the shows, give folks time to practice new displays and download new aircraft and if it's too often folk will just get fed up with it. Theme shows are a good idea too but remember some folk don't like certain types of aircraft (I don't like modern or large types for example) so some flexibility is needed. Most real shows, even themed shows, have a mix of types of all ages so I think we can work with that. Very well organised chaps, even when someone was missing the gaps were filled in very well and very quickly, just like a real show. I think it needs to start on time and folks who are late can drop in when they can, again just like a real show. Hope to do this again chaps, see you on the ramp next time. Grin

Quite right...Wink...!

As in a real show, you either make time to watch/enter it all, or just pop in and out when available... Wink...!
That's the way it works...

I would love to be able to join in with the U.S Tour flights organised by Jared....
...but I live in England and Jared and his crew live in the U.S, and therefore there is a time difference, resulting in me being tucked up in bed when the flights occur, so I accept that I can't join in unless I make a special effort.
I wouldn't dream of suggesting that Jared changes his flight schedule just to suit me... Wink...!

may I suggest using the TeamSpeak server next time (If everyones bandwidth will allow it)? That way we could talk to each other, and let the airport controller decide whos turn it is to fly. It would also help keep oganazation problems down to a minimum....

Just a thought.  Grin

regarding teamspeak, I don't have any problem with this as long as it is not a must, and people who don't use it are not apart of the event.
What I mean is that i'm not confortable with spoken english, and my accent is just so bad that usually nobody understand me, or I can't understand people with particular accent (north UK...)...
down here, everybody's first language is not english, and it has to be accounted for.

How about including a dogfight with two flyers in classic warplanes....or pick a time theme, all planes at the show from the same era kind of thing....

It wouldn't always need to be a carefully structured airshow, you could just hold a rally one afternoon.  Pick a theme, say WW1, and compile a list of a dozen or so popular aircraft to downloaded from that era - Camel, Triplane, Eindekker, DH-2, etc.  Then people can drop in whenever they get the opportunity, and if someone wants to put on a display or set up a dogfight then they're welcome to organise it themselves.  Keep it low key and informal.

Was it just me or was the servers only letting on about 18 players at a time? Because I've connected to ws pilot quite often before and on the day of the airshow i spean about an hour and couldn't connect to the server everyone else was on  Cry
I think this is low poly http://www.rwy12.com/rwy12/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=11 ; altough it comes as a rwy 12 object library the fence placer tool appears in your aircraft list andshouldnt cause too much lag, and i you dont need rwy 12 to use the fence placer ( i dont think)
Or you could make a really small object in gmax just for spectating ( like a sphere) if someone knows how to incorporate it into fs.

No NOT a sphere. Spheres are the worst thing you could possibly make for that purpose. A cube will have 6 polys, and 6 polys only. A good sphere with a 3 inch on-screen diameter can have thousands.

Was it just me or was the servers only letting on about 18 players at a time? Because I've connected to ws pilot quite often before and on the day of the airshow i spean about an hour and couldn't connect to the server everyone else was on  Cry

This was probably due to the fact that someone in the game, (possibly you also) didn't have the proper ports open. It's too time consuming to scan every person who joins, so It's up to everyone to make sure that they're setup is corrected BEFORE joining. Cheesy

Also, I realised that Windows Firewall was interfering with my connection to the 23458 server. Even if it's only temporary, TURN OFF your Windows Firewall/Anti-Virus programs if you want it to be hassle free.

If you know the names of the people on the server during the times you cannot connect, PM me (those names) and I will do a port scan to see who may have their ports closed. Cheesy

OPENNING PORTS is not hard at all! Make sure they are open so everyone can have an enjoyable experience! Cheesy

Nice work with the Router Tutorial, eno. Tongue
