That's normal practice with aircraft designers which makes the Spitfire even more of an enigma.

The 109 was a brilliant design concept possibly let down by certain design flaws not being properly addressed in order to maintain production. I read that the tailplane problem that had always been a weakness was considerably improved when they reverted back to the original wooden structure. This was due to shortage of metal in the later stages of WWII.
