All right!  Two of the three are default aircraft, and the third is fairly common already.  I was expecting at least one military jet!

So, do we have a date for the race yet?

When choosing the planes do you consider the poor 56k user who cannot download 28Mb/26Mb of seafire because his connection disconnects after 2 hours to stop him downloading large files. I can only download 25Mb!!!!

Oh well Ill try

Mic, I can break the Seafire file down into several smaller pieces and send them to you that way if you want.  Just put them back together at your end and you'll have the same result as if you'd downloaded the .exe file in the first place.

I thought we'd ruled out the FPS heavy AH Seafire after the Innsbruck race? - If it's gonna be used then I might aswell not even bother starting the race. Innsbruck was only about a 30 minute race & I lost 10nm just through freezes caused by about 8 FPS heavy Seafires.

Hey all,
As it states, we still aren't sure whether the Seafire will be used. WE have been considering the users with the less powerful systems and 56K modems, and clipper and I are busy trying to decide which aircraft to use. Not to worry, we should reveal soon, and we hope it all runs smoothly for you (pun intended Cheesy)

Now, let's see your flying skills at the course!

hey, you removed the seafire!!! Cry
I just gave her a ride, and she is definitively good, more my stuff than the extra, too sensible on the controls...
but it's my feelings...
anyway, we will "race" with the kingair!!I already see the screenshots, with an inverted kingair few feets over the runway... Wink

Okay, all three defaults!  That does make life easier for the repaints too.

I can't find a Comet repaint kit, does one exist?  I'm exploring the bitmaps now, finding out which bit goes where and labelling everything I find.  I'll post the results when I'm finished, for those who want to do their own repaints.

Thanks for changing the Seafire guys - for the people who don't have FPS issues it's fine, but if your pc is a bit on the slow side then the Seafire is a major handicap.

When we all took off from Innsbruck I applied full power at the same time as everyone else, but after 3 or 4 major pauses on takeoff - the leaders were halfway across the first lake by the time i'd cleared the runway.

Cheers,

TSC.

I'm trying to regain a bit more sanity before I try that, I can work around most of the distortion but the wing uses one pattern for all four surfaces - top and bottom, left and right.  So chequerboard on the top means chequerboard on the bottom as well!  No numbers either because they'd be reversed on the other side  Cry

Once you get the first repaint sorted out, it's pretty quick to do a load more - look what's available at Uncle Gryshnak's Used Plane Yard.  You want the orange and black one Mic?

If it's with default planes, then there's no problem for me to join in on the race. I like to participate. Just give a while to create my own repaint.

By the way, where can I download those repaints you guys made?

PS: Can I have a 3-digit number? I like to be number 314. It's my sqruadron number. Grin

I just did those repaints last night, I'll put them on my website shortly.  I'll make a blank template for the Comet as well.

Painting your own plane is excellent, Katahu!  If everybody does that and sends me the files, I can put them all together and make them available to everyone before the race.  Just be aware that each repaint set (Extra + Comet + KingAir) = 4.2mb, although I may be able to reduce that with a bit of fiddling.

You'll have to check it with the race organisers but I don't see a problem with a 3-digit number, or even a 6-digit number.

Don't do it specialy for me, as I'm not sure to join, except if somebody else is interrested. I wouldn't feel confortable if you spent your precious time repainting these 3 A/Cs for nothing...

You can see the patch on the tail. A bit distorted by the way the MS developers applied the textures.

Nice one!  You even kept the weathering on yours, particularly around the engines - I took the easy route and just went for large areas of flat colour.

Quote:

You must have discovered that the tail fairing uses the same patch of colour as the engine nacelles - you can't paint one without painting the other.  C'mon Microsoft, there was unused space on the bitmap that could have been used for that.

That's the idea - whatever paint job you have applies to all three planes.  Changing from red to blue to yellow in the same race would just be too much hassle and confusion.  Better to pick your team colours and stick with them all season (the first race they were just randomly assigned, that doesn't really count).

This week only at Uncle Gryshnak's Used Plane Yard, we've got a real bargain for all you aspiring racers!

We all know racing isn't a poor man's sport - why, the cost of competing can easily send your dreams spinning into backruptcy before the season is half over.  That's why your good friend Uncle Gryshnak has found you a real bargain!
...
Only one previous owner - in fact, only one previous flight!  Our ground crew have repaired renovated this prime example of beautiful workmanship, just to give one of our lucky customers a step up into the winners circle.  That's right folks, with this loving restored aircraft (and a head start, a strong tailwind and a bit of luck) this could be your ticket to the big time!  With the help of our friendly finance department and a quick trip through our world famous spray shop, this plane can make you the envy of all your friends.  Call in today and let us show you how to make it to the big time!

YOU CAN TRUST UNCLE GRYSHNAK!!!

Edit: Yes it really is available if anyone wants to fly it in the race...

It took longer than expected, mainly because of the distortion on top and bottom of the fuselage - nice smooth curves on the bitmap came out with surprising shapes on the finished plane.  Again, shame about the red tail fairing but there's no way around that.  At least the other two should be fairly straightforward.

Or should I make the whole fuselage underside red?  It would look nice in yellow and black too  Grin

I'll start making these available soon, I have an idea to keep the download size within reasonable limits (trying to keep the total below 20mb if I can).

I didn't really say that did I?  Really?  Someone remind me not to say that again.

Here's the Extra in the GeeBee black/yellow paint scheme, numbers can be added later.  Now that I've got the shapes sorted it only takes a couple of minutes to change the colours.  That's the KingAir and Extra done with this setup, just the Comet to go!

Hey Gryshnak, did you get my e-mail that came with my repaint?

I figured that you should try it out and see how it looks [up close]. I was also hoping you might be able to distribute it so that others can see me with that liverly.

I have one more favor, but you don't have to rush on it. Can you make a similar liverly for the Extra 300 and the Comet? I will appreciate that. But if you don't have time, just send me a blank set for the two aircraft and I'll do it myself. I don't have any blank sets for the Comet and Extra and there is no such set on SimV.

Doh!  Sorry Katahu, that'll teach me to check my email more often.

I've got my hands full with repaints at the moment, but I'll send you a blank for the Comet and Extra so you can do your own repaint.  If anyone else wants to do their own paint job as well, that'd be excellent!

A leaky water pipe in our dining room wall is probably going to take me away from repainting this weekend  Cry

I'll paint one in overall white and label all the bits tonight, then put it on the website for everyone who wants one.  Paint it up, fly it around, then if you're happy with the results send it back to me and I'll include it as your race entry  Grin

What I was planning to do was make 3 or 4 patterns for each plane and put them on the website.  Then people could either fill in the colours they want and send it back, or tell me and I'll change the colours for them (changing red to blue or black to white only takes a moment with a simple bucket fill).

Many thanks for that... gonna try a ww2 type Yak paint with a 'red star' spinner, so i'll take on the paint thing myself

And another question: where do i get the rest of the textures in case i decide to join a race

What I did last time was to repaint a whole bunch of planes in random colours, zip them all together, and put it on my website so everyone could download it.

This time I'd like to make templates available so people can do their own repaints if they want to, or at least tell me what colours they want and I'll do it for them.  Then I'll collect all the files together before the race and make 3 separate zip files, along with the appropriate aircraft.cfg file for each.  Since there are several dozen competitors already, my biggest worry is running out of web space!  I have 20mb available, does anyone have more room if we need it?  Of course we could also submit the zip files to SimV but I'm not sure if that's appropriate for a one-off race event like this.

We don't know the race date yet, but I'll probably close the paint shop 48 hours before it starts.  That would give me 24 hours to put the files together and another 24 hours for everyone to download and install them.

Remember that repaints aren't actually necessary to compete so latecomers could still use the default planes, but it looks so much better if everyone has their own team colours   Grin

I haven't a clue how to do that!  Something about alpha channels on transparent parts.  I'll see what I can do, I need to learn about it sooner or later anyway.  Meantime would you settle for a jet black interior, with a jet black pilot?  It's the Ninja look!  8)

Oh dear, someone accidentally ran a forklift into it last night while we were packing up!  But I'm sure we can fix it for you, one more scratch will give it a bit of character, eh?  I'll throw in an extra roll of duct tape too.  Coming your way soon...

I made some more repaints for the racers. I haven't posted shots of the Comet because I realised that the aircraft's overlay textures seem to ruin the design. I sent all three repaint just now to Gryshnak so that he can post it at his site. IMO, the Extra looks narly! Grin

Wow!  Gnarly to the max, dude!  Totally awesome repaint.  Just needs some race numbers now  Grin

You're right about the Comet, I'm halfway through doing the GeeBee template and it's taken the whole afternoon to get the wing textures lined up.  Gonna look seriously hot when it's done - my wife accused me of showing off  Roll Eyes
