NEW YORK (AP) - An engine fire forced a British Airways jet to return to John F. Kennedy International Airport shortly after taking off Thursday night.
One of the four engines on the London-bound Boeing 747 ignited shortly after its 11 p.m. departure, said John McCarthy, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The plane landed safely and no one was injured, he said, and the pilot extinguished the fire.
Approximately 300 passengers were on Flight 116, which was headed to Heathrow airport, McCarthy said.
The passengers and crew were scheduled to take another flight Friday morning.

Dear me, perhaps now is definately the time that the Boeing should be replaced by Airbus... Wink

We seem to be forgetting the most important thing here. Before you go bashing Boeing because there was an engine fire, remember that Boeing DOES NOT make engines, they build airframes. Are you going to blame Starcraft when your Mercury outboard dies? Maybe you should go complain to Rolls-Royce, Pratt & Whitney, or General Electric, which ever engine this plane had.

more often than not it comes down to bad maintenance.
and that would make it the airline's fault.

I put a dime and a nickel that BA uses RR engines.
It just seems "right" in a way  Smiley

In an A330 the danger might have been greater, seeing as it only has two engines.. Then again, the A330 engines wouldnt ignite. Im a strong Airbus contender see, but I have nothing against Boeing.

I was watching Top Gear the other day and Jeremy summed it up beautifully;

This car is like an Airbus; an engineering marvel but there's just not that sense of passion (as opposed to Boeing's sense of passion)

I sat with that in my head ever since...  Wink Grin

Losing an engine inflight isn't all that bad. Just descend to a lower altitude and find the nearest alternative. It's less dramatical than most people think.  Smiley
