Right now I'm listening to a CD made of an LP recorded on/about 1958, "Cantares de Navidad" or "Happy Songs for Christmas", an collection of Christmas songs recorded by several well-known (in Puerto Rico) groups of the time.

While I was only about 5 years old at the time it first came out, that LP was one of the best sellers year after year.  My father called that LP "Papá" ("Father"), and joked that the money to put me through college came from the sales of that record.

Oh yes, it was mostly recorded at the Puerto Rico Record Mfg Corp studios in Old San Juan, and pressed there, under the "MARVELA" label.  My father set up the studio and factory about 1951, and the family owned the factory up until 1975, when my dad finally retired.

Okay, so I doubt any of you will have ever heard of the songs, record, or even label, but it does bring back memories of my playing in the recording studio, my dad making test tapes as I banged on the piano and organ keys, of being allowed to press a record or two, of slipping hundreds of records into the paper envelopes and into the cardboard jackets, then processing them through the shrink wrap ...

IT did, especially since I also found a number of vinyl LPs with the family's brand among my late mother's belongings.

Now, to see how I can get them transferred to CD ...!

Get a CD recorder and plug your turntable into it... or do what I do and plug a turntable into your sound card inputs on your PC (found I needed a preamp for that, though).
I have maybe 100 LPs and have barey made a dent digitizing them... still working on my old cassettes.  Tongue
A lot of work, but what a joy to toss that stupid casette in the trash once I've ripped the music off it... Grin

There's a pro here who will do it for you or give advice if you wish to do it yourself. Very interesting site. http://uk.geocities.com/soundrediscovery/
He's in the UK so there might be similar people in the US. I would be surprised if there aren't.

I found more tips here. http://www.pcabusers.net/vinyllp/vinyllp.htm

This all seems a tad time-consuming & I seem to recall some years ago it being mentioned that it would soon be possible to record digitally from a vinyl record. Unless I'm imagining it this obviously didn't come to anything.
