It would probably be easier to have it all as one pack, in the same style, to avoid having to download several different repaints.

How about we make them permanent numbers.  That way I can give everyone a custom job with their name

What I meant was, I'll do a repaint and send it to Jake for inclusion.  Doesn't add anything to the file size, and actually makes it easier for Jake because he's got less repainting to do that way.

I suppose you could do that, as long as it doesn't cause too much confusion Wink

Hey Guys,
Clipper hasn't got back to me yet ((I asked him whether this would be ok) so I'll wait and see what he says. I'm sure he won't mind though. Anyway, I love this idea!!  Grin Grin
If I were racing I would be No. 64, but I'm not racing (I'm a judge) so count me out.
See you all at the races!  Wink

I just made a texture for myself, gonna try it out.  If it works, it will be a template and Ill do everyone.  Simple: I put the number on the tail, name in a black box on the sides, name on the bottom of the wings, and instead of microsoft (lol) i put SIMV RACING

I haven't found one yet, so I'm overpainting the existing one.  What a pig!  The wings are simple but the distortion on the fuselage sides must be seen to be believed - I put a simple black/white chequerboard stripe from nose to tail and it came out all twisted and skewed.  I can overcome it, but it shouldn't be there in the first place...

Hey guys,
Glad to hear the progress on your aircraft. Great repaint Gryshnak! I've been thinking though; the race is on Saturday the 17th, so please can you upload the textures as soon as they are done?

No problem, I'm out tomorrow night but they'll be done by Wednesday at the latest.

Nobody has taken 00 as their number?  I wondered if anyone would paint their plane black and play Dick Dastardly  Grin

Have you saved a layered file? That way you only need to paint one, and then change the number/name, save it, and repeat.

I dunno what the limit is on the amount of racers...

Yes it is!  If it's a question of simply adding numbers to the existing paint job, I can help out with the repainting now because I just finished mine  Grin

Edit: Should I upload the file as if it was a screenshot?  I can't see any way to send it directly to Clip.

That isnt as easy as it might sound, this plane really is a pain in the ass to repaint.

I was about to try that!  Position a number on the wings and fin, mask off the pilot, then fill the entire bitmap with black and see what happens.  Hang on, I'll give it a try...

Gryshnak

Edit: Yes!  Okay, I've done a completely black plane with the number 13 in white.  I wish they were all that easy  Smiley  Different colours could be done if you don't mind a plane in simple overall red, blue, green etc

I really dont have time to dell with the disaster of painting the extra.  Im busy studying for finals and working on a few repaints of my own.  If someone else can do them, that would be great, and Ill help out in any way possible.

Also, for raceday:  MAKE YOUR USER NAME YOUR NAME AND NUMBER!  for example, I will be JAKEMASTER #7

That way, we all know who you are and what your number is on the Aircraft label

As soon as this race is over, I'm gonna put up a document called "How to add race numbers to your planes - a guide for people who have absolutely no idea about repainting."

Then later in the season, everyone will be able to paint their own numbers on DC-3s and Tiger Moths and get all the bugs ironed out with plenty of time to spare!

Though you may join for future races. These will be permanent numbers, to save confusion, and endless repainting.

Remember, everyone needs a copy of every repaint, so it would save you, and everyone else, a hell of a lot of time if you simply uploaded the entire zip file to SimV. But you better hurry, Saturday is approaching fast! (though not fast enough Tongue)

I figured all the textures would be combined into one big zip file which would be uploaded to SimV and anyone who wants to race would go and get it when they can.

I've almost finished putting together a tutorial about adding race numbers to planes, pretty much 'basic repainting for dummies', it should be up by the weekend so hopefully all this frantic repainting shouldn't happen again.

I just figure that you upload, you only need to do it once.  If you email, people are gonna ask you to send it again or say that their inbox was full, or something like that.

I've never uploaded a large file to SimV, is there some problem with it?

I might be adding to the already difficult task at hand, but here may be an idea to think about. Along with uploading (or emailing) the textures, how about including an already edited aircraft.cfg file. This will do two things: 1 - ensure everyone properly edits the config file so all the textures work, and 2 - ensures all participants have the same parameters set for performance.

I know I can't be the only one who likes to tweak theirs for better performance (I mean... who doesn't want a 172 that can knife edge all day long) - and this will ensure equality across the board.

Just a thought.

I think an edited cfg file was always part of the plan, otherwise we'll all see our own planes but everyone else will be grey!  To make this work, ALL players will need ALL the textures and the SAME aircraft.cfg file.

Yep, that's the idea.  It's aimed less at careful shading and details, and more at adding racing numbers and a quick paint job.  Though I was surprised at how many of the default aircraft aren't really suitable for this - have you ever tried to paint numbers on the Jenny or the Cub?  I ended up using the Extra 300 for the examples after all!

I wouldn't have thought this would be too hard to do Tongue

One, big zip file, with all of the textures and an edited aircraft config (existing repaints can be easily added again, if anyone has them). Users must be sure not to edit the names of the folders, or any of the config entries, to ensure that everyone sees things correctly. If everyone does it correctly, there should be no fuss.

Emailing it to each individual racer (and don't forget the judges) would be extremely time consuming, compared to just uploading it once at SimV, without going through the trouble of getting everyones email address, and making sure everyone has it.

Once I get the paints, I will create the Aircraft.cfg entries and upload to simv.

I will include the ENTIRE cfg because that way no one will cheat by changing the aircrafts parameters (ie giving it 1000hp)

After saving the config file, right click on the file and go to properties. Click the "read only" box and then, apply.

That way, you wont have anyone modding the file you make.

Sorry if I am telling you something you already know. just wanted to give a heads up.

Ice, send me the ones you've done (email address is in my profile, plenty of room in my inbox) and I'll start throwing paint at the rest of the numbers.

Edit: Don't bother, I've just repainted the Extra in 18 different colours/patterns Smiley  Hopefully I can get them converted to 32-bit and uploaded tonight, otherwise it'll be first thing in the morning.

Okay, it's done.  The file has been successfully uploaded, it's 15MB - apologies to those with 56k modems but there are a lot of textures in there.  They won't win any prizes for detail or neatness but 19 repaints in 3 hours was quite a challenge!  I don't know how long it'll take to appear on the website, it probably has to be checked by someone first.

It's late, I'm going to bed.  See you all at the races!

My emergency repaints are pretty simple, only one or two colours each, if yours look better than that we can still use yours.
...
The important thing is, the race is now less than 12 hours away and we have to get something out FAST.  Some people have dialup modems and it's going to take time for them to download all the files, whichever ones we use.  Mine haven't appeared on the site yet so they've probably got to be approved by an admin or something before they can be downloaded.

Before we go any further with this, perhaps someone could download this test file

http://www.metaphor.karoo.net/SimV/4racers.zip

and let me know if it works?  There's no point in sharing repaints that only work on my PC but not on everyone else's machine.  There are 4 random paint jobs in there, it's 4.5MB.

Echo, email me a copy and I'll overwrite the one I painted last night.

Ice, if you've already done some of the paint jobs send them to me, and I'll use mine to fill in the blanks.

But we've only got 8 hours to compile the various repaints, I can put them on my website so everyone can pick them up quickly but we've got to give people time to download everything.  And the race starts in just over 8 hours!  Dammit, I haven't even had time to fly a practice lap yet...

I've got Ecko's paint job, and added it to the collection.

If I don't hear from anyone else with repainted aircraft by 2pm, I'll put the whole lot in a zip file on my web site and post a link to the MP forum.  Sorry to anyone who turns up after that time, but that only leaves 6 hours before the race starts - not much time for people to download and install the 15MB file (although it will be a very simple installation, just unzip everything into the Extra300 folder and it's done).

Aaargh!  I deleted my old website to make room, then uploaded the zip file.  But now my FTP is going wrong and it won't give me a directory of the website so I can't make a link!

Would someone mind going to www.metaphor.karoo.net and looking for a file called SimVrace.zip please?

And if you find it, post a link here...
