Whee, I did it!
Took me a while, and a bit of fiddling around, but I finally turned this BD-5J:
Into this one
Still some tweaking to do, but I've learned a lot already.
Unfortunately I can't open one of the files which I presume is the interior textures. In fact when I look at the textures folder for most of my downloads, or even the default planes, I can view a few of the .bmp files but the majority won't open at all. I've tried Pixia, PhotoPlus 6, Paint, Irfanview, Canvas 8, and even my trusty but very ancient PhotoStyler. Every one of them refuses to open these files. What's the secret?

Edit: Got it now, DXTBmp opens those files

Pretty smart for a first attempt. Best of luck for the rest of your repaints! 8)

you might try DXTBMP, it opens all files, most are readable few are not converted.
Get it here >>>>

The reason you couldn't open some of the files is that they are in DXT3 or DXT1 format, which is unopenable by any editor without the converter, DXTBmp.
Most of these files contain an alpha channel, which allows the FS engine to create those nifty reflections on everything.
Download DXTBmp
Here's a good website:

Very nice repaint. You did a good job there on your first one.
However, it would be better if you added plating effects.

Do you mean like Panel lines, etc?
Just to throw an alternative to DXTbmp. My prefered tool when not adding reflective / transparent textures in ImageTool. It cant add alpha, but it can open multiple files at once, it can read .PSD directly, and i find it to be much quicker then dxtbmp. I can get a link if you want to try this program out.

One step at a time, the texture file is only 512x512. Apparently I can make it bigger and add more detail, so that'll be the next step.
Now, can someone please download the original plane I used from here
http://www.simviation.com/fs_concept2.htm
and tell me where to find the cockpit? I've opened everything in the texture directory and I can't find the blue interior or the consoles in any of them!

Well, since this an FS2000 aircraft, there isn't any VC view stuff, so I assume you mean what is there when you are looking at the regular panel display.
That means you're looking in the wrong folder. Check the panel folder. It has all the files for the cockpit in there. I guess its the one with the panel and blue triangles on the corners you're talking about, right?

Oh, but there is a VC!
Here's the standard cockpit view, I can find this in the panel directory:
and here's the VC cockpit:
You can also see it clearly in Spot View.
I can't figure out where it's being generated from, or how to change it. The real aircraft this is based on, has an orange-red interior and that's what I'd like to duplicate as part of my repaint project.
Any help is appreciated.

just had a quick look myself, and your right, its not there! ??? it may be some of it uses the colour of the model, not a texture, but that dosnt explain bits like the throttle.
In the VC it could well be a gauge, but i didnt know they could be applied to the normal model.

Actually, gauges CAN show up in the exterior view. I discovered this whilst creating an H-1b for FS. I didn't realize it until I was doing extensive cockpit modification and it really surprised me. I'm not sure how or why it does, but there it is.
The throttle in the exterior view is definitely a gauge, so the rest of the interior is most likely a product of the material applied in whatever design program was used. If you are VERY interested in changing it, I would suggest you contact the author and ask if he can modify/update the aircraft.
