I always fly with all the lights off. It enables me to only focus on the screen with no peripheral distractions.
After about 5 minutes, your eyes adjust to the darkness and night flying in the Sim takes on an entire different experience.
Here, I took off in the Beaver for a bit of early morning dusk flying.
The snow made for a very nice flight.

Just to chip in, that can seriously ruin your eyesight...whenever I fly night IRL, I always keep the cockpit a little dimmed, I guess same thing can be said to simmers

My eyesight is fine. 8)
I barley fly at night anyway,
My Sim is too loaded with Payware scenery to not see it!
I have a small spotlight overhead shining down on a dimmer and usually have it low so I can see my keyboard.
Thanks

That's even worse! Flying in the day time, at night... hold on... When the sim is in the day, it will be brighter, and putting more strain on your eyes! So if your eyes are adjusted to the darkness around you, it can affect them.
But like you said about the lamp, that helps a lot. I have one perched above my computer, on the CD rack.

The ultimate experience....
copy & save each shot to a folder,
turn off the lights and hit "Slide show"!
Really looks wild with the black backdrop.
The shots really stand out.
